PANTHERS owner Rick Frost reckons being selected to stage Event Two of the World Cup has put Peterborough back on the speedway map.The Berkshire-based businessman rescued the club from the brink of extinction when taking over in August 2008.
Now, less than a year later, the Showground plays host to one of the biggest meetings on the speedway calendar tonight with 5,000-6,000 spectators expected.
Frost also insists playing host to such a grand occasion is a huge vote of confidence for his management regime.
He said: "I am absolutely delighted that Peterborough Speedway have been given the privilege of staging the Speedway World Cup at the Showground
"It is a huge vote of confidence in the new ownership and management of our club and will no doubt bring many benefits and greater recognition to the city of Peterborough and the sport of speedway everywhere.
"The opportunity of staging this event actually started with negotiations many months ago before the exchanging of contracts.
"That was followed by months of hard work by my management team and many of our loyal supporters who have willingly given up so much of their spare time to help us achieve the standards required for such a prestigious event.
"I have every confidence this meeting will be a great success and is also just reward for all our supporters who stood by this club through some pretty bad times.
"They can now hopefully see their loyalty and patience being rewarded – both with our performances and position in the Elite League and now through this event. We have truly put Peterborough back on the speedway map and world stage."
Australia are hot favourites to triumph tonight and go straight through to the final in Leszno, Poland on Saturday.
Their team is spearheaded by former Panthers stars Jason Crump and Ryan Sullivan.
Poland, Great Britain and Slovenia complete the line-up. Frost added: "Who do I want to win? Great Britain, of course. Who do I think will win? Australia.
"But what I do know is we are sure of a fantastic night of racing."
