A WONDERFUL night of World Cup speedway was hailed as a major success by the man who brought it to Peterborough.Panthers owner Rick Frost was involved in months of negotiations to secure the prestigious staging of Event Two at the Showground – and he was rewarded with some stunning action played out in front of a huge 5,068 crowd.
Poland roared to victory with 54 points, holding off a strong Australian challenge (52) with host nation Great Britain securing the other place in Thursday's race-off. Slovenia predictably brought up the rear.
Frost said: "Seeing such great racing has definitely put Peterborough back on the speedway map. That was the reasoning behind staging the meeting and I am delighted with how it went.
"This will be just about the best meeting anywhere in this country this year. I would think the British Grand Prix at Cardiff is the only occasion that can rival this.
"I know that the people from Sky TV were very, very pleased with the track we gave the guys to race on and I am sure everyone will have really enjoyed what they saw."

"And to break through the 5,000 barrier capped an excellent night. The Showground looked absolutely fantastic with so many people here – the grandstand was packed to the rafters and the crowds were 15-deep all the way around the track.
"We have to work hard on attracting bigger crowds for our Panthers meetings. The quality of the riders is a big factor in getting fans through the turnstiles, but the relatively low team-building limit in the Elite League means you can't always accommodate a proper number one.
"That is something that will have to be looked at because this shows that big names are a huge draw."
Piotr Protasiewicz was the happiest former Panthers rider after helping Poland to glory.
Jason Crump dropped only one point for Australia but Ryan Sullivan endured a disappointing night with just one victory and seven points.
Huntingdon-based Danny King and skipper Chris Harris both did well for the Brits.
