Speedway: Panthers boosted by 48 per cent rise in season ticket sales

Peterborough Panthers have received a major early boost in their 40th anniversary year with season ticket sales increasing by almost half.

Peterborough Panthers have received a major early boost in their 40th anniversary year with season ticket sales increasing by almost half.Club bosses have reported a 48 per cent increase from last season's figures.

The club are already close to bettering last season's total of around 150 - and there is still a month left before the deadline.

It is great news for owner Rick Frost who has invested heavily since rescuing the club from the brink of possible oblivion in 2008 and authorised a major re-branding exercise this winter.

Frost said: "It is good from the point of view of more fans committing themselves to coming to most meetings this season.

"It's also an indication that they are as optimistic as we are about the season and a sign that they like the look of the team."

Frost has regularly stressed that the club need to dramatically increase their attendances if they are to stand a chance of breaking even. Average crowds fell to around the 800 mark last season and he has high hopes of raising that figure past the 1,000 mark in 2010.

The new campaign starts on March 15 and fans have until February 15 to purchase season tickets by completing an application form available from the club website www.peterboroughspeedway.co.uk

MAJOR winter signing Troy Batchelor gained a slice of compensation for his Australian Championship near-miss on Sunday.

Batchelor retained his South Australia State title at Gillman, near Adelaide, on Sunday night. Eastbourne's Cameron Woodward was runner-up while Wolverhampton's Tyron Proctor took the bronze medal with touring British rider Josh Auty fourth.

Teenager Dakota North kept up his impressive winter form with half a dozen points while Taylor Poole continued his comeback from a back injury with five.
