Speedway: Panthers hope to get Roynon ruling reversed
Peterborough Panthers have vowed to fight a decision that threatens to wreck Adam Roynon's comeback dream.
Peterborough Panthers have vowed to fight a decision that threatens to wreck Adam Roynon's comeback dream. The British Speedway Promoters' Association management committee have ruled that youngster Roynon cannot double-up between the Panthers and Workington this summer because he didn't race in the Premier League last season.
It seems a harsh decision as Roynon was kept on the sidelines because of serious neck and head injuries suffered at a pre-season Great Britain training camp.
He spent a week on a life support machine at Addenbrook's Hospital, Cambridge, and underwent surgery to stabilise his broken neck.
Roynon, 21, spent weeks in hospital and then months in a protective metal halo after being discharged to continue his recovery at his Barrow-in-Furness home.
He wasn't given the go-ahead to start practising again until the final weeks of the season – too late to reclaim his Workington team place.
Peterborough director of speedway Peter Oakes said: "We will pursue every possible avenue to have the decision reversed."
THE Premier League Fours is on its way back home for a Silver Anniversary reunion.
Peterborough's East of England Showground will stage this year's showpiece final on Sunday, August 15.
The team championship has been a red-letter day in the Premier League calendar since 1976 and is one of speedway's longest-running events.
It regularly attracts big crowds and is returning to Alwalton after a two-year gap.
Peterborough staged its first Four Team Final in 1977 and continued to host the event every year until 2002 when it was switched to Coventry.
Since then it has returned to the Showground only once – in 2007 – but for the 25th time Peterborough will stage the event on behalf of the British Speedway Promoters' Association.
It is one of the sport's Super7even meetings and will involve eight of the Premier League's top clubs with semi-finals and the final on the same afternoon.
Panthers co-owner Rick Frost said: "Since I took over the Panthers in August, 2008, fans have been asking whether the Fours would ever be back at the track.
"It clearly has tremendous history at the Showground and we will do everything we can to make sure our 25th hosting of the championship will be one everyone will remember."
PANTHERS have been given a major boost as three of the club's elite partners have signed new deals for 2010.
Back on board for another 12 months are Stanair, Shire Security and TC?Harrison.
All three have agreed to extend their backing as the Readypower Panthers head into the 40th anniversary season.
