Pedersen will use Panthers’ opener as practice for the GP

FORMER number one Nicki Pedersen is to make an unexpected return to the Showground on Panthers’ opening night.

The Danish star was the club’s top rider for much of last season until an acrimonious September departure.

Two-time world champion Pedersen claimed he had been ‘sacked by email’ when being replaced by fellow countryman Hans Andersen.

But he’ll return as part of the ‘Sullivan’s Seven’ team providing the opposition to the 2012 Panthers on Monday, March 19 in their curtain-raiser.

Just like reigning world champion Greg Hancock, he’ll use the meeting as preparation for the first round of the World Championship in New Zealand on March 31.

Pedersen said: “I’ve chosen to do as many meetings as possible in the UK before the first GP, so I can test my equipment and myself and to see where we are in terms of being ready before we go to New Zealand.

“It’s important to be as race fit as I can be as early as possible, because it’s a unique situation with a GP being held so early in the year.

Therefore I need to get behind the tapes as much as I can before March 31.

“It’s also good to get back to Peterborough because it’s a big and fast track and that will help get the physical sensation and technique of racing a fast track into my body in preparation for the big 415m Western Springs track in New Zealand.”

Pedersen, Hancock and Ryan Sullivan will be joined in the away side of the pits by Panthers doubling-up men Rene Bach and Kyle Newman.

They are to share spots in the city team with Lasse Bjerre and Richard Lawson respectively this year.

Bjerre and Lawson will ride for Panthers on the night.

Hope he gets a good reception. Even though it's a mercenary sport, he was treated very shabbily last season it seems.
