Panthers drawn to face the Robins in KO Cup

SPEEDWAY: Panthers have been handed a quarter-final Elite League Knockout Cup tie against Swindon in what is set to be a revised competition this year.

And that means a return to the Showground for 2011 squad members Hans Andersen and Troy Batchelor, who have both switched to Blunsdon for the coming season.

The Abbey Stadium has not always been a happy hunting ground for Panthers in the past, but their defeats there in 2011 were narrow ones, and both Linus Sundstrom (10+1 and 14) and Michael Jepsen Jensen (9) recorded impressive scores.

In addition, Kenneth Bjerre made a guest appearance and scored 16 points as well as adding 13 in an early-season visit with King’s Lynn.

BSPA Vice-Chairman Jon Cook said: “We are far forward in changes to the competition format to make it stand out from league racing, with full details to follow on the eve of the season.

“The meetings will all take place within a small time-frame, and we are scheduling an early final this season which has been a bugbear in the past.

“The open draw has thrown up some great clashes including same race-nights and clubs that are only meeting once in league competition, and we are confident when full plans are revealed this will be a must-see night of racing for fans.”

Draw: Birmingham v Belle Vue, Poole v Wolverhampton, Lakeside v Coventry, Swindon v Panthers.
