GEORGE Boyd can now add the name of legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to his growing list of admirers. In his exclusive interview with The Evening Telegraph, Ferguson picked out the mercurial winger as his favourite Posh player before heaping praise on the rest of son Darren's newly-promoted squad.
The two-time European Champions League winner admitted he also remains an admirer of Chris Whelpdale, former United trainee Jamie Day, new Posh skipper Craig Morgan, star strikers Aaron Mclean and Craig Mackail-Smith and England squad goalkeeper Joe Lewis in advance of tonight's much anticipated friendly clash at London Road (7.45pm).
Ferguson said: "I think George Boyd is a beautiful footballer with a lot of class and I also like Whelpdale.
"The young goalie from Norwich also seems a very good player and we used to have Jamie Day here at United as a kid and I think it is great that he is doing well at Peterborough as he is a player I always like to see play.
"The team is very solid at the back and I think Morgan has really come on a great deal in the last two seasons. The two strikers, Mclean and Mackail-Smith, are very busy and certainly get the goals which is important in any team.
"Darren has them all playing the right way and I am sure they will get better and better in League One.
"Peterborough's young players have a lot more to offer and I am sure with the right guidance they will thrive in a higher division."
Boyd was facing a late fitness test on a foot injury before confirming his participation tonight. Posh manager Darren Ferguson is expected to give all his fit first-team players a run-out this evening including new winger Sergio Torres and Day.
They both came through their first appearance of the summer at Corby on Saturday after recovering from injury.
United's line-up is less clear. Sir Alex Ferguson said the team would not differ much from the one that faced Espanyol in Saturday's Testimonial match for Ole Gunnar Solksjaer.
England stars Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick missed that game because of a virus, but United still fielded a team stacked with international talent and Ferguson has confirmed they will not play tonight.
Saturday's United side was: Edwin van Der Saar, Danny Simpson, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Darron Gibson, Darren Fletcher, Paul Scholes, Nani, Ryan Giggs, Carlos Tevez. Subs Tomaz Kuszczak, Jonny Evans, Mikael Silvestre, John O'Shea, Fraizer Campbell.
Posh are anticipating a near 15,000 sell-out this evening after terrace tickets were put back on sale until 5pm today. The stands were all sold out by the end of last week.
POSH winger Alfie Potter made a winning debut for Kettering Town yesterday.
Potter, who has joined Kettering on loan, impressed during a 73-minute outing in a 2-1 victory over a Birmingham XI.
