Russell now has a better record than ace Hamilton

Motorsport: LOCAL kart star George Russell can now boast a better junior record than his racing hero Lewis Hamilton.Russell, 11, from Tydd St Giles landed his second Kartmasters British Grand Prix title at the weekend – that's one more than reigning Formula One world champion Hamilton.

Last year Russell won the title in the junior WTP class and on Sunday he did it again after making a seamless step up to the Comer Cadet karts.

But after qualifying in pole position following good drives in both heats on Saturday, Russell had a real fight on his hands to win.

Still trailing coming into the final lap and running out of tarmac fast, Russell showed nerves of steel to pass the leader on the penultimate bend to take the chequered flag.

He said: "I am really, really happy to have pulled this one off as it is a great race to win at this stage of my career. And of course having won last time it makes it extra special as Lewis Hamilton only won this race once in his junior career. But of course I know I have a long way to go before I get to that level.

"It has been a great year for me so far as I won the British Open a few months ago and now this so I get the choice of driving with the zero or the GP plate for the rest of the season."

But the season is far from over for Russell.

Currently leading the Formula Kartstars series after four rounds, this weekend the Cambridgeshire youngster heads out to Spa in Belgium to prepare for his latest assault on silverware.

"We go out this weekend to test the kart before the latest round of the series and of course I feel pretty confident of racing well again," he added.

"It is important that I keep focused on my driving as there are still plenty of races coming up and a lot of competition from some very good drivers."
