Rugby: Top RAF man flies in to the Borough camp
PETERBOROUGH Rugby Club have acquired the services of another first-class coach.
PETERBOROUGH Rugby Club have acquired the services of another first-class coach.Already going great guns at first team level under the guidance of head coach Richard Mardling and former Northampton Saints star Jon Phillips, Borough have added another former Saints player to the top tier of their coaching team.
He's Steve Worrall, who not only played at the highest level with Saints, but was also scrum-half for Rotherham in National League One and skipper of the RAF team until his retirement in 1996.
He is currently the RAF head coach and their chairman of selectors and will be a very valuable addition to the city club.
Last year Borough achieved a highest ever placing of fifth in Midlands Division One and with Worrall added to the coaching staff they'll be hoping to finish even higher in 2009/2010 when they will be plying their trade in National League Three (Midlands).
That fifth-place finish means the club are now ranked third in the East Midlands region - only Northampton Saints (Premiership) and Bedford Blues (National One) are ranked higher - but they are the largest club in the region, boasting over 1,000 members.
The club has in excess of 40 qualified coaches to oversee 18 squads ranging from Under 7s to veterans and also possess a flourishing ladies team.
The strength in depth among the senior section was recognised at the recent East Midlands RFU presentation evening when the seconds and fourths received trophies for topping their respective EMRU merit tables. And the thirds were runners-up in their division.
Also on the playing side, no less than 15 members of the senior squad were selected to play for East Midlands, who chose Borough's ground at Fortress Fengate as their base.
The 15 to play for East Midlands were Mark Hodges, Paul Cook, James Clarke, Jon Phillips, Marius Andrijauskas, Pete Brudnell, Pete Goodley, Ben Crooks, Paul Humphrey, Sam Crooks, Chris Kells, Pete Kolakowski, Joel Burpitt, Michael Cade and John Harlock.
Borough begin next season in National League Three (Midlands) with an away trip to Bromsgrove on September 5 and entertain Hereford the following Saturday.
Major award winners at the club's annual dinner were: ET Player of the Year - Duncan Low; Most Improved Player of the Year - Saad Sait; Ladies Player of the Year - Laura Phillips; Second XV Player of the Year - Sam Crooks; Third XV Player of the Year - Alex Nickson; Fourth team player of the Year - Jim Nugent; Clubman of the Year - Eamonn Murphy.
