Youngsters from Stamford Rugby Club created a piece of history at the weekend when they became the first team to score a try at the iconic Olympic Park Stadium in London.

The club’s Under 12 side were playing in the England Rugby Travel Tournament, which was a curtain-raiser to the Samoa v Barbarians match, and it was Stamford’s Ciaran Dolby who crossed for the first try in the tournament.

He touched down after only two minutes in the opening match against Sun Hill School and Stamford went on to win 14-0 and finish as tournament runners-up

Throughout the tournament Max O’Flaherty showed exceptional ball handling skills while James Birbeck put in some terrific tackles.

The Stamford players were all presented with tournament medals and later watched the Barbarians overcome a feisty Samoan side in the first international match played at the stadium.

The venue is also to be used for the forthcoming World Cup.
