Rivers will be no-go areas for anglers this weekend
I would be surprised if any of us will be able to fish our local rivers this weekend – after recent heavy rain all have been unfishable throughout the week.
I would be surprised if any of us will be able to fish our local rivers this weekend – after recent heavy rain all have been unfishable throughout the week.Prospects for those out during next week could see them have more luck though – once the levels start to drop you can expect some cracking action.
For now you will have to look at fenland drains and stillwaters for sport this coming weekend.
Very little has been heard of Ferry Meadows but conditions could not be better on either lake for bream fishing. Feeder tactics should see skimmers and bream showing with worm or red maggot the best hook baits. I doubt there are many matches on the fishery so you will have the pick of the pegs.
Predator anglers will also relish the challenge of coloured water in both Gunwade and Overton, and zander fans will I suspect be out in force with the prospect of a double-figure fish or two to be had.
Small dead baits will be your best bet with the hot pegs likely to be in the 30s and 40s.
Fenland drains will attract quite a few anglers this weekend and thankfully they rarely let us down. But you will have to give the March Twenty Foot a miss and also all the pegs on Whittlesey Dyke as they will be used for the weekend's big Angling Times Team Championship.
You still have plenty of options though. The Old Nene at Benwick is in cracking form and that's my top tip for this weekend.
It is full of skimmers and roach with the added bonus of tench, bream and big perch on chopped worm and caster.
Ramsey Footy Foot could be worth a visit and although there have been one or two poor results from Raveley Drain I would expect much improved action there now with extra colour and flow.
Stanground Backwater could be worth a try and Fields End Bridge is another small water full of fish right now.
Just a little further afield the River Welland through Spalding should be running into winter form. The past couple of seasons have not been great for matchmen along the length but pleasure anglers have seen some fine weights to punch and hemp seed.
The North Level Drain and also the South Holland have both been fishing well with a pinkie and groundbait combination best.
Stillwaters across the area will I am sure be very busy at the weekend and thankfully with no really cold weather in sight should fish well.
A lot of anglers have now switched from pellet to red maggot, with sweetcorn a good alternative.
