Ray lands record-breaking 61 lb monster carp

THEY say big is not always best but try telling that to Ray Armstrong, who has just caught the country's biggest common carp.

THEY say big is not always best but try telling that to Ray Armstrong, who has just caught the country's biggest common carp.Named 'Benson', the monster fish weighed in at 61 lbs when Armstrong became the first angler for several months to take it from the impressive Kingfisher Lake on the Bluebell Lakes day-ticket complex at Tansor just outside Oundle.

The record-breaking fish was taken on a boilie just 20 yards out from the bank.

Kingfisher Lake is a renowned big fish water but is recognised as the hardest on the Bluebell complex. It is really for the serious big fish angler although you can fish it on a 24-hour ticket.

There are approximately 150 carp in Kingfisher, whose stock has been carefully managed over the past three seasons to provide the best environment for growth potential of the fish.

I think there was a real air of concern from within the East Midland Team Championship league when news spread that a Van den Eynde side had joined this season.

Many thought they would run away with the top spot, but that has not been the case.

Yes, they have been consistent but on Sunday in round three on an in-form River Cam they came a cropper slipping down to equal fourth place on the day.

The consistent Sensas Mark One side based in Wisbech took full advantage, scoring a fine team victory on the day with 30 points. So, at the half-way stage Mark One have edged ahead, but with the River Glen and River Welland coming up next there is still a lot of room for others to make a late challenge for a semi-final place.

Top individual from the pegs above Baitsbite Lock was Jon Means, the MAP Peterborough skipper taking a net of skimmers on the long pole to record 19lb 13oz.

Means decided on a really bold approach, 'balling in' at the start with groundbait laced with squatt and caster. He caught 30 skimmers throughout the day and his fine win boosted the city side's confidence. They managed a creditable runner-up spot on the team front.

Result: 1 J. Means, MAP Peterborough, 19lb 13oz; 2 S. Northrop, Browning Hotrods, 18lb 6oz; 3 S. Higginbottom, Sensas Mark One White, 17lb 6oz; 4 R. Jenkins, MAP Peterborough, 15lb 4oz; 5 A. Leathers, Browning Hotrods, 15lb 1oz; 6 R. Johnson, Sensas Mark One White, 14lb 14oz.

Teams: 1 Sensas Mark One White, 30pts; 2 MAP Peterborough, 39; 3 Browning Stanjay, 43; jt 4 Browning Hotrods and Van den Eynde, both 44; 6 Wades MG, 57.

League: 1 Sensas Mark One White 6pts; 2 Van den Eynde 7; jt 3 MAP Peterborough and Browning Stanjay, both 13; 5 Wades MG 15; 6 Sensas Mark One Black 17.

n ANOTHER good turnout for JVAC saw more than 20 anglers take on Willows Lake at Decoy.

After several cold nights, it seems the fish are taking up their winter quarters and when they do, peg 25 takes some beating. It won Saturday's open match, and it won on Sunday as well.

Lucky angler to draw it was Adrian Wilde, who made no mistake fishing pole and pellet along the side of the island for an impressive 122lb 8oz.

‘Mr Consistent’ Alan Warren was second, making good use of plenty of room at peg 18 to record 79lb 8oz on pole and pellet, while Andy Gausden was third from peg 27 with 54lb 8oz.

Result: 1 Adrian Wilde, 122lb 8oz; 2 Alan Warren, 79lb 8oz; 3 Andy Gausden, 54lb 8oz; 4 Kevin Wilmot, 54lb.

Decoy Lakes, Willows, Saturday: 1 G. Whitwell, Decoy, 90lb; 2 M. Spivey, Cats & Dogs, 85lb; 3 R. Edmundson, Decoy, 78lb.

Decoy Lakes, Beastie, Sunday: 1 N. Baxter, Decoy, 69lb; 2 T. Dawson, Van den Eynde, 51lb 8oz; 3 R. Wells, Decoy, 42lb 8oz.

n THE Grebe AC held their annual waggler challenge – a popular rod-and-line only match – on the Forty Foot narrows on Sunday.

John Bowland fished a long 18 foot waggler rod just a yard from the near bank with chopped worm and castor and managed to catch three tench plus some big perch to run out a very clear winner.

n THE latest Whittlesey AA club match was fished at the Carrot Wash just upstream of Glassmoor Bank, and with bright and sunny conditions, clear water and no flow, anglers expected the worst.

But the venue fished well with club chairman Dave White emerging a clear winner, He netted two tench on chopped worm and caster, topping them up with a net of small roach on pinkie to finish on 9lb 1oz.

Runner-up on 7lb 13oz was Bob Thornton, who had an all-small fish catch taken on the whip and pinkie over groundbait for 7lb 13oz.

Terry Tribe completed the frame putting 7lb 12oz to the scales.

n FENLAND Rods were on Decoy's Beastie Lake at the weekend and again catches were not up to the fishery’s usual standard.

Kevin Bevis took the honours, bagging 39lb 8oz from peg 29. Mac Campbell had to settle for the runner-up spot yet again, finishing with a level 39lb, followed by Tim Bates with 32lb.

n IN their latest match, anglers from Yaxley, Farcet, Holme and DAC fished for the Tony Copeman Cup on Raveley Drain and although weights were not as good as expected every competitor caught lots of fish throughout the match and were led home by Frank Bevilacqua.

This was Bevilacqua’s first victory of the club’s season and he caught over 200 roach and small skimmers using pinkie on a size 20 hook at six metres over a bed of groundbait to put 5lb 13oz to the scales.

Last season’s winner Lionel Whaley had to settle for second place with 4lb 15oz of roach, skimmers and rudd.

n DEEPING AC anglers had a ‘Wright’ day last Sunday when they fished the third round of the South Holland League on Spalding’s River Glen.

Graham and Geoff Wright were both pegged downstream below West Pinchbeck Bridge with Graham taking full advantage of his draw on the first peg where the fish had shoaled.

Feeding a pinkie line close in he took a few roach before reverting to a chopped worm line out in the water. This brought an immediate response from perch with Graham going on to win the match with 12lb 6oz.

Three pegs downstream Geoff Wright fished punch on the whip to take second place with 9lb 9oz of quality roach. Spalding’s Andy Wilson was third with a mixed net of 9lb 8oz.

n THERE is a busy weekend in store for local stewards and match organisers of the Angling Times British Pike Championship.

The massive pike match, which is sponsored by Fox International and has attracted close to 400 competitors, takes place on Saturday on three main drains in the Fens – Cock Bank, Glassmoor Bank and the Twenty Foot Drain from Whittlesey through to March.

Competitors from all over the country will be taking part but local rods have a very good record in this major event and will be looking for further glory this year I am sure.

The draw takes place at Manor Leisure Centre in Whittlesey between 7am and 9am, with fishing from 10am until 3pm.

There are one or two steward places still available. Give match organiser Ted Rowe a call on 01733 264735 if you think you could help out on the day. There is a small remuneration and a free breakfast thrown in!

n GRAFHAM Water has fished well this week for both bank and boat anglers. The best bag of the week belomged to local angler Ian Heading. Ian, who caught eight fish for 27lb 2oz with the best weighing 5lb 5oz.
