THE annual Wisbech St Mary junior tournament proved to be a huge success with more than 250 teams taking part.Hundreds of matches were played over the course of the two-day event across 12 different age groups for both boys and girls.
And while the entry was slightly down on last year's bumper total, the quality of the football ensured that the Wisbech St Mary five and six-a-side tournament remains one of the biggest and best around.
Organiser Sue Dighton said: "We were a few teams down this year but we have been going for more than a decade and in that time a lot of other tournaments have sprung up.
"But we were still delighted with the turnout and the standard across the range was fantastic.
"It takes a lot of effort to put on a tournament like ours and I would like to thank everyone who helped make it happen, especially our sponsor J.S Holmes.
"We are already looking forward to next year."
The action was once again dominated by local sides with Deeping Blue taking the Under 9 boys title after beating Ramsey 2-1 in their final and Werrington taking the honours in the Under 13 category.
The Under 14 final was an all local affair as Wisbech St Mary Purple just trumped their Yellow stablemates after a penalty shoot-out ended 14-13 in their favour.
And the girls did the area proud too with Deeping A winning the Under 12 section while Peterborough Ladies beat Bohemians 2-0 to take the Under 16s title.
