Posh turn to Birmingham defender

POSH are believed to have made enquiries about highly rated Birmingham City centre-half Krystian Pearce. With the protracted pursuit of Stockport County defender Josh Thompson still in limbo, it is understood from sources in Birmingham that a move has been made to attract England Under 19 international Pearce to London Road on a year's loan.

Despite being at St Andrews for 10 years since joining the Midlands club as a schoolboy, 19-year-old Pearce has never featured for the first team and has spent the past two seasons on loan with Notts County, Port Vale and latterly with Scunthorpe.

Last season the 6ft 1in defender played 47 times as Scunthorpe won promotion to the Championship and was in the side when Posh were beaten 1-0 win at Glanford Park before featuring in the 2-1 defeat at London Road in March.

Both Posh manager Darren Ferguson and director of football Barry Fry declined to comment on the matter but it is understood both are becoming increasingly frustrated by the lack of a response from Stockport regarding their first choice target Thompson.

A second bid for the 17-year-old has still not received a formal reply from the club, who are in the process of coming out of administration.

Posh have been linked all summer with an un-named Premier League centre-half but this week the move looked to have fallen through after Dutch giants Ajax expressed an interest in the player.

This week Posh have also been running the rule over French defender Florian Boucansaud who was released by FC Caen following their relegation from Ligue 1 at the end of the season.

Whatever happens over the next few weeks, Posh seem determined to add to their pool of defensive talent despite an excellent display from Sam Gaughran in this week's 4-0 friendly win against St Albans.
