Posh's Westwood: I can do a job

TRANSFER-LISTED Chris Westwood is convinced he can do a job for Posh in the Championship.Double promotion-winner Westwood - who has helped the club climb from League Two to the second tier of English football in successive seasons - is one of a dozen players to be told they can leave London Road this summer.
Westwood is rumoured to be attracting interest from a host of clubs, but the 32 year-old is adamant he is fully focused on fighting for a place in the Posh fold next season.
Westwood said: "I don't see any reason why I couldn't play in the Championship. It will obviously be a tougher league with stronger sides than we have come up against in the past two years, but I feel I could do a job.
"I watched Wolves a few times last season and there is certainly nothing at that level that we would need to be frightened about.
"As far as I am concerned I'm still a Peterborough player and until that changes I will do my best for the club.
"I am very happy at Peterborough and still have another year on my contract, but I do want to be playing football and I believe that was on the gaffer's mind when he said I could go.
"I haven't really spoken to my agent much this summer and I certainly haven't had any contact with any other clubs as yet.
"The only way I will consider an offer is if it is right for me - and I am not talking about money.
"A lot of people accused me and Dean Keates of only coming to Posh for financial reasons after we had won League Two with Walsall, but I can guarantee that wasn't the case.
"The club showed us a hell of a lot of ambition and that is a big thing for me. I have always been at clubs that have ambition and want to achieve."
Posh boss Darren Ferguson admitted both Westwood and 150,000 midfielder Sergio Torres could remain involved in first team affairs if choosing to stay at London Road.
Should the vastly experienced defender move on in the weeks ahead, he will look back on his time at London Road with fondness.
Westwood added: "It is really pleasing to have been part of a piece of history here.
"Winning promotion two seasons running is an unbelievable achievement. The lads here have achieved more in the past two years than a lot of people manage in their whole careers."
Westwood could be well down the pecking order if he stays at London Road as Posh boss Darren Ferguson continues to pursue Grimsby central defender Ryan Bennett and an unnamed Premier League defender.
Grimsby dismissed Posh's undisclosed offer for Bennett as 'derisory' over the weekend, but Fry was intending to meet Mariners chairman John Fenty at the chairman's conference in Portugal this week.
Ferguson confirmed that Posh have also made a bid for a midfielder who has been on the club's radar for some time.
