Posh: Mclean will be a Toon threat

Peterborough United striker Aaron Mclean has been highlighted as one of the biggest dangers in the Championship by title favourites Newcastle United.

Peterborough United striker Aaron Mclean has been highlighted as one of the biggest dangers in the Championship by title favourites Newcastle United.Mclean featured in a media report in the North East which singled out four star turns in the second tier of English football.

The London Road ace was listed alongside Reading striker Kevin Doyle, Swansea hitman Jason Scotland and classy Cardiff City midfield star Joe Ledley.

It's a flattering piece of coverage for Mclean, but he was quick to stress it is not entirely accurate. The former Grays hot-shot believes Posh are full of hidden dangers as they approach Championship football for the first time in 15 years.

Mclean said: "It is flattering to have your name mentioned alongside three really good players like that.

"We are all in the game to get recognition and to receive it from people around a huge club like Newcastle is great – even more so as I have never even played at this level yet.

"But it is wrong to concentrate on me because we have a whole team of dangermen. There are players in every position who feel they can play at this level and who will surprise people next season.

"There are some great names scattered around the Championship and we will be coming up against 11 quality players in every game.

"There are probably players who have been at the top level for most of their careers that don't even know who we are, but we want people to be leaving games next season talking about us."

And Mclean has tipped stylish Posh midfielder Paul Coutts in particular to shine.

Young Scotsman Coutts was a roaring success last season after being plucked from the obscurity of Highland League club Cove Rangers.

Mclean added: "I'm convinced Paul is going to be the one to watch for us next season.

"This level of football will suit his game down to the ground. He will have more time on the ball than last season and I know he is going to do really well.

"We're all raring to go and show what we can do. We have an exciting first few fixtures which have captured the imagination and I'm sure it's going to be a memorable season."

Posh open their Championship campaign at Derby County on August 8 before hosting Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom at London Road.

The first-team squad were at London Road yesterday for weight and fitness checks. They return to pre-season training on July 1 before heading out to Marbella for a training camp which will also include a friendly against League Two side Rochdale.

Posh play their first friendly at St Albans on Tuesday, July 14. They also have summer home games against Premier League opposition, Aston Villa (July 18), Spurs (July 21), Fulham (July 25) and Sunderland (August 4).

n Posh goalkeeper Joe Lewis will be a spectator from the substitutes' bench as England attempt to reach the European Under 21 Championships Final today.

England tackle hosts Sweden in Gothenburg (5pm) in the first semi-final. Italy play Germany in the other semi-final.
