Posh legend Farrell signs for Stamford

POSH legend David Farrell has joined Stamford.

POSH legend David Farrell has joined Stamford.Daniels chief Tuncay Korkmaz has captured one of the most popular players in recent Posh history from Boston United.

Flying wideman Farrell played 388 times and scored 52 goals during nine years at London Road. He is credited with scoring the greatest hat-trick in club history against Barnet in a Third Division play-off semi-final in the 1999-2000 season.

Now he will be strutting his stuff at the Vic Couzens Stadium, but new boss Korkmaz insists he hasn't signed Farrell based on past glories.

He expects the former Aston Villa and Wycombe man to produce the goods on a consistent basis in UniBond League Division One South football.

Korkmaz said: "David is certainly a big-name signing for a club like Stamford.

"There will obviously be a lot of expectation and I feel sure he will be a great player for us on the pitch as well as an excellent figure off it.

"Some of the young players in our squad will no doubt have watched him playing for Posh in the past and I feel they will benefit a lot from the presence of vastly experienced players like him and Ben Sedgemore in the dressing room.

"I remember having the privilege of watching him play for Posh against QPR a few years ago. Posh won 4-1 and he tore the QPR defence apart.

"David still has a lot of football left in his legs and he feels he is good enough to give it a go at Stamford. I'm sure he can give me one or two good years here."

Korkmaz has also snapped up another left-sided player by persuading full-back Andy Ellis to follow him to Stamford from Deeping Rangers.

Korkmaz added: "I did have some issues on the left side but bringing in Andy and David will certainly sort those out."

Korkmaz is still aiming to sign a central defender with Shaun Pearson expected to move on to a higher level.

Five other former Posh players playing or managing on the local non-league scene next season:

Ben Sedgemore (Stamford)

Paul Hill (Northern Star)

Chris Plummer (Northern Star)

Pat Rayment (Deeping)

Stuart Cobb (Wisbech)
