Peterborough United successfully pulled off a double defensive capture of two League Two players yesterday.Grimsby Town centre-back Ryan Bennett (19) and Dagenham & Redbridge left-back Scott Griffiths (23) both arrived at London Road on loan deals with a view to making the switches permanent in the January transfer window.
Bennett has captained a Grimsby side which sits second bottom of the entire Football League throughout this season and last, while Griffiths has racked up more than 200 appearances for the Daggers. They are seen as the solution to the defensive problems which have plagued Posh so far this season.
Both players trained with the club yesterday and go straight into the squad for the home Championship clash against Scunthorpe this afternoon - live updates during the match - although Ferguson was quick to insist they will not start the crunch game.
He said: "Both players fit into our budget and I'm delighted to have them on board. I'm not going to chuck them straight in against Scunthorpe as they have only had one training session with us, but they will be in the squad.
"I have no doubt Ryan is a good signing for the football club. He is a player we looked at in the summer, has good size, good potential and I am really looking forward to working with him.
"Scott will certainly boost our options in a position where we have Tom Williams and Jamie Day out of contract in the summer. He has been on our radar for a while.
"He is not the biggest, but has great spring, decent pace and a good left foot which will all make him a decent acquisition."
Posh were frustrated in their attempts to sign Bennett during the summer when the deal was blocked by then-Grimsby boss Mike Newell, but the defender is delighted to finally be at London Road.
He said: "It is nice to get the move out of the way. I reported for training at Grimsby on Thursday and was told that I was coming down to Peterborough. Things are sorted and I am looking forward to getting started.
"There is a good management team here and it is one of the best clubs I could have joined. It is obviously a big step up the leagues, but a challenge I am relishing. I will do whatever is required to improve.
"It was very easy to sell the club to me. Peterborough have been promoted in each of the last two seasons and are on the up.
"The players are top quality and I know that we will get out of the position we find ourselves in at the minute. Darren has assured me of that and I believe him."
Griffiths had failed to agree personal terms after holding talks at London Road on Thursday, but the deal was successfully resurrected yesterday.
Remaining tickets for Posh's trip to Newcastle next month go on general sale this morning from 9am until noon at the London Road Box Office. The club have already sold around 2,200 of their allocation of just 2,600 tickets.
