Posh's Krystian Pearce: I'm here to play

LOAN arrival Krystian Pearce has immediately set his sights on breaking up Posh's star central defensive duo.

LOAN arrival Krystian Pearce has immediately set his sights on breaking up Posh's star central defensive duo.Pearce (19) was due to officially join on a season-long loan deal from Premiership club Birmingham City this morning (Monday) and insists he has not moved to London Road to sit in the shadows.

He has laid down the gauntlet to international duo Craig Morgan and Gaby Zakuani, who formed an excellent partnership on the way to League One glory last season.

Pearce, who was given special permission to line up for Posh in their 3-0 friendly defeat at the hands of the second city's other club, Aston Villa, on Saturday, said: "Fighting for your place is part of the game and I am ready to do that because I have come here to play football.

Ferguson: Pearce signing completes Posh's transfer business.

"The gaffer has told me about the players here. I am well aware of the competition and I am ready for it.

"Peterborough are a team that like to play football and that should suit me. I definitely don't think I will have a problem fitting in."

Pearce has impressed against Posh in each of the last two seasons while on loan at Notts County and Scunthorpe. The England Under 17 and Under 19 international revealed he shunned a return to 'The Iron' in favour of moving to London Road.

Pearce added: "I chose to come here over going back to Scunthorpe.

"I have always had tough games against Peterborough and it is good to be on board now.

"There are a lot of good young players here and the club is clearly going places with a big future which excites me.

"There is a clause in the deal that allows Birmingham to recall me, but I doubt I will be needed as they have just signed three new centre-backs."

Posh boss Darren Ferguson reckons Pearce will play a big part in the club's return to the Championship.

Ferguson has shelved his interest in teenage Stockport defender Josh Thompson after confirming the club's second bid was rejected by County.

He said: "We have two tremendous centre-backs and I felt it was essential to bring in a third.

"Krystian is a player we have watched over the past couple of years. He has always played well against us and is a young player that fits the criteria of what we are looking for from new signings.

"He is a good defender with excellent mobility and I feel sure he will prove to be a very good signing for the club."
