Peterborough United fans have been urged to show their appreciation of a double promotion-winning side by purchasing tickets for the club's friendly football festival against Premier League teams.Chairman Darragh MacAnthony believes the excitement and entertainment offered by a side preparing for Championship football just two years after finishing 10th in League Two should be re-paid by money-spinning summer attendances.
Posh have three pre-season games against Premier League sides at London Road in eight days next month. Aston Villa visit on Saturday, July 18 followed by Spurs on July 21 and Fulham on July 25. They also host Sunderland on August 4, just four days before the start of the Championship season.
All four teams have pledged to bring their full first-team squads meaning the likes of Ashley Young, Robbie Keane, Kenwyne Jones and former Posh favourite Simon Davies will all be on view.
Posh are charging admission at last season's prices for adults at 20 and 15 and with concessions at 12 and 8, but fans have been signalling their displeasure at the prices on websites.
Posh have so far sold over 2,500 tickets for the Spurs match and more than 1,000 for the Villa game, but the Fulham match has yet to capture the imagination of supporters. The Sunderland game was only announced yesterday, but the club are hopeful of a big away following for that match.
Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: "We have put together a great calender of games against top class opposition who will be bringing all their first team players.
"I appreciate the prices aren't cheap and won't please everyone, but let's put things in perspective price wise for tickets. The fans have watched two promotion-winning seasons for the same money as before I arrived and I believe we are one of the cheapest season tickets in the Championship next season.
"It was a big disappointment not to get Manchester United again or Rangers, but we tried hard to make one of them happen. Maybe next time!"
Posh director of football Barry Fry played a big part in attracting the top flight clubs to the city. He has received assurances that the top stars will be appearing.
Fry said: "I have spoken to Martin O'Neill, Harry Redknapp and Roy Hodgson personally and they have all confirmed that they will be playing their first teams against us.
"It is a great pre-season campaign and one that will provide a good warm-up to the Championship season."
Fulham will be using the Posh match as a final warm-up for their Europa League campaign.
Tickets are already on sale at the London Road Box Office or at www.theposhtickets.com. Fans can also purchase tickets 24 hours a day by calling 0844 847 1934.
