Pick-up for Penguins against the Stars

Ice hockey: Peterborough Penguins are on the lookout for new talent.

Ice hockey: Peterborough Penguins are on the lookout for new talent. The Under 16 girls ice hockey team have just finished their debut season and have now begun a recruitment drive ahead of their next campaign.

And while the local lasses have had a tough time of it in the Southern League, a string of defeats has done nothing to dampen their enthusiasm.

Team manager Maggie Morley said: "We set the team up a year ago and we have been very pleased with how it has gone. At the start of the season these girls had only been playing for a few months and launched into the season with all the enthusiasm a team could need.

"Results continued to improve for the girls and despite some one-sided scorelines, they continued to play and give it their all and were rewarded with some goals.

"We will be working hard at training over the summer and we are really hopeful that we can get some more people down here to join the team.

"Penguins also have a womens team so any ladies who want to play should come down and get involved. We can provide kit and the first session is free."

THE Penguins senior side ended their Southern League campaign on a high note with a win against the Oxford City Midnight Stars.

Despite netminder Mandi Ferleyko tearing a knee ligament in the first period, the city slickers still managed to wrap up a 3-1 win at the Peterborough Arena.

After player-coach Sharon Khan had given Penguins the lead, the win looked at risk when Ferleyko picked up a bad injury sliding for a shot.

But despite the setback the home side held their lead and a heavily strapped up Ferleyko returned to the ice for the second period to hold the visitors at bay.

And her efforts were rewarded when Jo Knell and Carmell Buttimer made it 3-0 before Stars grabbed a late consolation.
