Phantoms unveil top Prospects

PHANTOMS have unveiled three young players they hope will become stars of the future.

PHANTOMS have unveiled three young players they hope will become stars of the future. The treble winners have named Ryan Bainborough, 17, Luke Ferrara, 16, and 17 year-old Zandy Cleves as their ‘Prospect players’ for the coming season.

All three will begin training with the first team squad and, depending on performances, may be given some opportunities to play English Premier League hockey.

Last season’s ‘Prospect’ players were Callum Fowler, Thomas Jeffrey, Grant Bignell and Dale Jowett and of those four, two – Fowler and Jeffrey – became regular features on Colin Patterson’s all-conquering roster.

Now the new wave of talent will be pushing hard to make a similar impact in their breakthrough campaign.

England Under 16 netminder Bainborough said: “I was over the moon when Phantoms director of hockey Jon Kynaston told me I would be on the ‘Prospect’ program as it is such a wonderful opportunity for me.

“To be able to train with guys like Brent Gough, Maris Ziedins and all the rest is a dream come true. I will have to get used to the puck coming at me from all directions, but I am sure I will cope.

“I have the selection trials for Great Britain coming up in October and this has given me a lot of confidence ahead of that. I just can not wait for the season to get started now.”

All three prospects will continue playing either Under 18 ice hockey or with the English National League Islanders but will train at least once a week with the Phantoms first-team squad.

Depending on their development that could lead to a place on the bench for some Phantoms games where all three will be hoping to do as well as predecessors Jeffrey and Fowler.

Cleves said: “I am a defenceman so it is going to be great learning from the likes of James Morgan, Dwayne Newman and all the rest as it will help me develop as a player.

“And when you look at what Thomas and Callum did last year it gives us all a great incentive to work hard as we could be rewarded with a place on the bench for some pretty big games which would just be awesome.”
