Ice Hockey: Peterborough Phantoms Have Sacked Head Coach Doug Irwin.Irwin was told the news hours before last night's defeat against Swindon Wildcats and will be replaced by Bretton stalwart Tim Peacock for the rest of the season.

Club top brass have decided to act in a bid to restore form ahead of the play-offs after watching Irwin guide the reigning treble holders to just 18 wins from 40 competitive games.

Owner Phil Wing said: "Peterborough Phantoms have parted company with head coach Doug Irwin.

"After what has proved a difficult season for the team, with inconsistent performances not helped by a catalogue of injuries, the management have decided to make the change while the team are still in the hunt to retain their play-off title."

"We thank Doug for his efforts this season but feel now is the right time to make a change as we push hard for end of season honours."

"The head coach for the rest of the season will be Tim Peacock. Tim has been assistant for the past two seasons and has been a player with Peterborough Pirates."

"Tim has worked with the players over the past two years and knows their strengths and weaknesses and we feel confident that he can maintain our league position.

"Over the next few weeks Tim will have the opportunity to put his own mark on the team."
