Peterborough High School took two teams to the British Indoor Rowing Championships at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham – and both returned as national champions! The British Indoor Rowing Championships is the world's biggest indoor rowing race and the largest indoor sporting event in the UK, with over 2,000 competitors racing over the course in just one day.

The massive event takes place in a high-octane environment with races going on throughout the day where competitors race up to 2,000 metres.

Adorned with their gold medals, the boys' Junior 11 (Year 6) team and the girls' Junder 12 (Year 7) team took their places on top of the podium to receive the applause of the huge crowd as they simultaneously appeared on giant screens in the impressive arena.

The girls were doubly successful as they also walked away with a British record time in their relay.

The boys won comfortably by 6.5 seconds, but the girls left it to a nail-biting final few metres before beating St Peter's/St. Joseph's from Stoke into silver medal place by just one second.

Apart from their impressive wins, the competitors had an exhilarating day watching other prestigous teams and rowing stars take their positions on the machines as, over the years, the championships have become an integral part of the training and selection programmes for both the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race crews and the British rowing squad.

Teacher in charge of rowing at Peterborough High School, Angie Axe, was over the moon with the students' achievements.

She said: "This was a really huge event. I'd have been delighted with one gold medal position but coming away with two was beyond my wildest dreams! The boys and girls performed brilliantly under huge pressure and against some very stern opposition and I am so pleased that their training has been so well rewarded".

The winning teams comprised Robert Baile, Archie Benson, William Coulson and Alex Slater.

The winning girls team was Abigail Jessop, Melissa Ozmen, Aimee Parker, Amy Whitehead.

Travelling reserves who also received certificates: Poppy King, Darcy Skelton.
