Perry in good shape ahead of the Grand Prix

IT'S the Chatteris Cueman against the Dumbarton Destroyer tonight. No, this is not the wacky world of wrestling, but the serene sport of snooker.Local ace Joe Perry faces hometown favourite Marcus Campbell in the opening round of the Grand Prix in Glasgow and he goes into the contest in confident mood.
Perry has been delighted by his form on the practice table since launching the new season with an unlucky opening round defeat at the hands of Jamie Cope (also his World Championship nemesis) in the Roewe Shanghai Masters.
World number 12 Perry hasn’t actually won a match in a major tournament all year, but he is not about to press the panic button.
He said: “I know I need to get up and running for the season. I feel good and practice has been exceptional in the past few days.
“That doesn’t count for a lot when you take to the tournament table, but I couldn’t be much happier with the way I’m playing.
“I outplayed Jamie throughout in China yet somehow ended up losing the match. He is a player that seems to have a hold over me, but I am not too disappointed with what happened out there.
“I am not looking at it as a long run without winning because last season was pretty good on the whole and just ended a bit disappointingly - and it is not like I have been losing badly to players I should be beating either.”
Perry boasts a 9-7 win over Campbell in the 2004 UK Championship, but the Scotsman is renowned as a tough all-round player and is sure to have the majority of the support this evening.
Campbell has beaten teenage whizzkid Judd Trump to qualify for the opening two ranking tournaments of the season and hit a maximum 147 break in the 2008 Bahrain Trophy.
Perry (right) added: “Marcus is a tough player who has been around for a long time. I’m sure it will be a buzz for him to play in his own backyard, but luckily for me snooker audiences don’t tend to be quite as rowdy as football crowds.”
