People are still killing bream for the table
Once again I have received disturbing news that fish have been caught from the River Nene and taken away for the table.
Once again I have received disturbing news that fish have been caught from the River Nene and taken away for the table. The culprits have been targeting Orton locks where they were seen to be catching bream at the weekend, then killing them.
I have been told the police were called but at present the law is very obscure and there is little that can be done.
Thankfully the law should be changing in the not too distant future.
In the meantime all we can do is hopefully educate all in the way we do our fishing in this country, which is catch and release on rivers drains and stillwaters, and not destroy our stocks at will for the sake of a cheap meal.
This weekend there are one or two big matches taking place, perhaps none more important though than the charity event being run by the staff at Lovells Carp Lakes at Tallington.
The match is to raise funds for the Help for Heroes Fund, which was set up a couple of years ago to raise funds for the wounded men and women of our armed forces.
The charity is strictly non-political, they simply want to raise funds for the wounded. So why not fish the match and do your bit for them.
The match takes place this Sunday, with the draw at 9am. For all the details call Jimmy on 07709 756557.
The other big match on Sunday is the River Welland Championship which has been revived by match organiser John Spalton.
The original concept of the match was a team event but Spalton is looking to change it all to a new individual format.
He tells me he already has 50 plus booked in and is expecting at least double that by the day of the match. You can contact Spalton on 07808 750779 for all the details.
The Nene Summer League was due to start in a couple of weeks time but has now been put back until the end of August.
The first venue on Sunday August 30 could well be at the bottom end of the River Nene at Railworld going back upstream. Once again John Spalton is your man with all the details and team entries.
I congratulated the Environment Agency for the hard work they put in cutting some of the massive weed growth back for us so that we could stage the Angling Times team Championship Final.
Unfortunately the rest of the river is in desperate need of a good clear out too, especially going up through the Ortons and Milto , and indeed higher up still to Oundle and beyond it seems to be as bad as ever.
There was a time when the weed was managed each year but not anymore and I fear we are going to be left with a weedy, clear, sluggish river for ever more.
Looking on the bright side, I have to say that the River Nene is full of fish right now. In fact, I would say that its fish stocks are quite possibly at a peak, if only we could present a bait through the weed to catch them!
Over the past few weeks there has been a spate of fishing tackle stolen.
Quite a lot of the gear was top notch, very expensive and with some items irreplaceable.
My advice is to keep it under lock and key when not in use and get it fully insured.
A good tip is to take photos of every item, then at least if it does get stolen, you can pass the pictures onto the police and local tackle shops and you also have full details to show the insurance company to make that all-important claim..
