Panthers' away win will boost play-off chances - Swales

PANTHERS team boss Trevor Swales believes a Saturday night triumph at Eastbourne can provide a welcome confidence boost for his play-off chasing team.

PANTHERS team boss Trevor Swales believes a Saturday night triumph at Eastbourne can provide a welcome confidence boost for his play-off chasing team.Panthers jumped up to third in the Elite League after the 46-44 success at Arlington when both sides were forced to track weakened teams due to the World Championship Qualifying semi-finals.

It was a welcome result for a team performing poorly on the road this season. Swales said: "We needed to prove we could get a result on the road and it is long overdue.

"Away wins are just that bit sweeter and obviously very important with the new scoring system this season.

"The only way riders boost their confidence is by winning races and meetings which is something we have now done.

"We all got together before the meeting and it was clear the boys were really up for it.

"We had another little chat at the interval when we were in a good position and everyone was determined not to let it slip.

"It would be doing us a disservice to suggest we only won there because Eastbourne had two riders missing.

"We were in the same boat ourselves and one of them – Kenneth Bjerre – is renowned for being very, very good down there. You can only beat the team that is put in front of you and we did that."

Panthers are some way adrift of the top two teams in British speedway. They trail league leaders Swindon by 14 points and are 10 adrift of second-placed Wolverhampton.

Swales added: "Both Swindon and Wolverhampton are strong teams but we can't worry about those teams.

"Our concern is making sure we continue to pick up the results to finish as high as we possibly can to qualify for the play-offs.

"It would rank as a very disappointing season if we don't make the top four, but we have to take things meeting by meeting."
