Peterborough Olympians: Paul Barber
Paul Barber: Hockey, Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988
Paul Barber: Hockey, Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988Barber was a King's School pupil who started his hockey career at Peterborough Town before moving on to the competitive London League circuit.
His international aspirations prompted that move and 100 Great Britain appearances for the tough-tackling defender justified the decision.
Barber was a short corner specialist who appeared in successive Olympic Games including the memorable gold medal campaign in Seoul.
Britain beat West Germany 3-1 in an unforgettable final, four years after playing badly against and losing to the same opposition in the semi-final in Los Angeles.
Barber picked up a bronze medal in those Games, but retired soon after claiming his gold.
Meet more Olympians: Chief Sports Writer Alan Swann has traced sportsmen and sportswomen who attended the Olympics while living in the Peterborough area.
