A PETERBOROUGH man has picked up a best in Britain award for tenpin bowling.
Geoff Brown (54), from Werrington, has won the British Tenpin Bowling Association Senior Male Bowler of the Year prize for 2011.
Brown, who first took up the sport 42 years ago, has won the award after a great 12 months that featured tournament wins in Stroud and Basildon, and he was a member of the England senior team that won the Triple Crown in Wales.
He was also fifth in the National Championships and fourth in the BTBA UK championships - both of which are open events and not restricted to seniors (over 50s).
Brown, who bowls in internal leagues at both Lakeside Superbowl and AMF Bretton Bowl, is also currently top of the Senior England team rankings after nine of 10 events. And he has already qualified for Team England for 2012 when they will be looking to retain the Triple Crown in Guernsey.
Brown is captain of the Cambridgeshire senior team and led them to the county finals this year, in which they were placed fifth.
He also bowls for Peterborough in the Midland Scratch League Premier Division and is sponsored by Pete’s Pro Shop at Bretton, which is owned by his England team-mate Gary Oakley.
“It’s certainly been one of my better years,” said Brown, “and I’m delighted to win this award. Mind you, if I can’t get it right by now after all this time, I ought to pack it in.”
Brown has scored three maximum 300s during his career - the last in 2008, and he made his first England appearance in his early 20s.
