Northants close on a place in the national final

THE Northants Bowling Federation county team could clinch a place in the national final of the Derbyshire Trophy inter-county championship tomorrow when they face defending champions Norfolk, weather permitting.

Northants have won both their matches so far in the southern section, while this will be Norfolk’s first of their three-match programme, so a Northants victory would almost certainly guarantee them a place in the final against the northern champions at Newark in April.

The three home rinks will be in action at Stamford, with the other three facing the long trek to Acle, where a considerable number of the Norfolk side are based.

n THE women’s singles in the Northants Women’s Bowling Federation county indoor championships have reached the semi-final stage, with the Stamford and Peterborough clubs opposing each other in both.

Flying the Peterborough flag are Fiona Richardson and Sheila Craig, who will face the Stamford challenge of Rowena Weston and Pat Collicott respectively for places in the county finals being played at Stamford on Sunday, March 18.

n AHEAD of today’s crucial home fixture with nearest rivals Long Sutton, Stamford IBC’s A team have established a convincing 20-point lead at the top of the second division of the Lincolnshire League.

Long Sutton took 15 points from the club’s clash earlier in the season, but Stamford’s 16-2 win at Grantham last weekend ensured they hold the upper hand with three matches to play and visits to Skegness and Horncastle still to be made as they push for promotion for the first time in the club’s 20-year history.

Key to Stamford’s win at Grantham was the rink of Ray Harniess, Steve Travis, Malcolm Cullingworth and Richard Montgomery.

Stamford were trailing 11-1 after six ends, but then claimed 10 of the next 11 ends to eventually run out 23-15 winners.

Stamford’s mixed team will be aiming to increase their lead at the top of the second division tomorrow against Grantham.

n CROWLAND, home club of Peterborough League president Margaret Hadnam, are the latest club to adopt ‘nicknames’ for their Midweek League teams as opposed to the more traditional ‘A’, B’ or ‘C’ tags.

In recent times Westward decided to put more bite into their teams following the merger with Perkins by introducing names such as Lions, Wolves, Foxes, Tigers, Rhinos and Panthers.

Now Crowland will be hoping to fly to success this year, as their three teams in the Midweek League next season will be known as Jackdaws, Magpies and Ravens.
