TALENTED King’s Cliffe Flyers Keira McVitty has recently been learning from a former Olympic cyclist as she bids to become one of the best on two wheels.
The 15 year-old recently attended a Jaguar Academy of Sport Rising Stars workshop as part of a Mentoring and Education Programme (MEP) in Tunbridge Wells.
It was the fourth workshop she and the other 2011 Rising Stars have received as part of the MEP, which is delivered by Kelly Holmes Education on behalf of the academy.
Rising Stars have focused on various topics including financial planning, the world of agents and sponsorship as well as building a successful team around you. Throughout these sessions they have worked with Jaguar Academy of Sport patrons and ambassadors including Denise Lewis, Sir Steve Redgrave and Jessica Ennis.
The latest workshop focused on body and mind and was hosted by former British cyclist and ex-Peterborough resident Bryan Steel who enjoyed a 15-year racing career, won Olympic silver and bronze medals as well as five medals (four silvers and a bronze) at the World Championships and a pair of silvers at the Commonwealth Games - all in the team pursuit.
McVitty said: “The Mentoring and Education Programme is fantastic. I’ve learned so much including interacting with the media and how to cope with injury. I would never have received this advice without the Jaguar Academy of Sport and to be able to meet the likes of Bryan Steel, a key face in my sport, was amazing.”
Steel said: ‘It’s great to be able to work with British sports stars of tomorrow and to see them so engaged in what they are doing. The Mentoring and Education Programme is key in supporting young athletes and I hope some of the knowledge I’ve passed on will help them within their training and competition schedule.”
McVitty, whose father Mark is a cycling coach, took up the sport at the age of 12 and has made great progress. She is now part of the British Cycling talent team with her sights set on becoming an Olympian in future.
Last year she took silver in the Under 16 age group at the National Cyclo-Cross Championships and rode for Britain in the Tour of Assen in the Netherlands but her highlight to date remains her 2010 Under 14 success at the National 10-Mile Time Trial Championships.
