Head of the Nene rowing event cancelled because of frozen river

Friday 12.40pm: Rowers have been left disappointed after a popular meeting in Peterborough set to take place on Saturday has been cancelled because of frozen River Nene.

It is the second successive year the Head of the Nene event has had to be cancelled because of the weather.

Peterborough City Rowing Club announced that the decision has been made because the river froze overnight, and is 80 per cent covered with ice.

With further frost forecast tonight, there is no possibility of rowing in the river tomorrow.

Organisers hope to re-schedule the event to a later date.

Quite right Dalek Sec @4. There are some twits on here! Of course it is informational. And Rebel woman@2 - the summer is the season for regattas on the lake, the winter is the season for river races as the flowing water is not normally frozen.

Er @3 the story isn't ice on the river it's the cancellation of a popular event - isn't it the local paper's job to inform people of such things?

I can't take all this excitement: Plane spotted in sky over Peterborough, cranes spotted in Peterborough city centre, and now ice on river in the middle of winter. Steady on with all this news guys, some of us are being worked up into a frenzy here.
