Bowls community hit by two deaths
THE local bowls community is mourning the deaths of two prominent stalwarts whose outstanding contributions over many years as players, administrators and supporters were recognised with life memberships of the Northants Women’s Bowling Federation.
Close friends Betty Warters and Betty Morton died within a few days of each other this week, both at the age of 90, and their presence at local and national championships will be sorely missed.
Both were former presidents of the Northants Women’s Bowling Federation, with Warters also holding the post of national president of the English Bowling Federation.
She was also Stamford IBC’s founder lady president in 1991/92 and was also founder president of the Huntingdonshire County Women’s Bowling Association.
Among her national Federation successes were back-to-back two-bowl singles successes in 1982 and 1983; the pairs twice with Stamford’s Nora Holt in 1974 and 1981 and the triples, with Nora and the late Marjorie Kilby.
A resident at Blackstones Court in Stamford, she also represented Hunts in all disciplines at the national championships at Leamington over many years, and once lost in the singles final to the legendary Mavis Steele. She also won the county’s Over 55 pairs title with the late Joyce Holden.
The funeral is at Marholm Crematorium on Friday, February 24 at 1.30pm.
Morton, the mother of Huntingdonshire Bowls president Bob, was a stalwart member of the Peterborough & District club until her retirement from bowling.
Among her bowling successes was the Hunts county triples title in 1986 with Val Newson and the late Joyce Anthony, and the same trio were runners-up four years later.
Since her retirement from bowling, she has been an avid supporter of local bowls and was extremely proud to follow the fortunes of her grandsons, Ean and Tristan Morton, on both the national and international stage.
