Catch of the Week: Over the past couple of years Peterborough United’s Tommy Rowe has been kept busy tackling the striking forces that dare to take on the mighty Posh at London Road.
He has become a regular in the team and of late has even captained the side. But he has also found a little time recently to tackle the hard-fighting barbel that reside in the upper reaches of the River Nene above Peterborough.
I have fished a few times with him now and can tell you that he is very much the modern day angler and is no slouch when it comes to catching fish.
But barbel fishing is a side of our sport that is relatively new to this part of the country and it has taken him a little time to get to grips with the different approach you need to be able to bank these hard-fighting fish.
It all came good at the weekend though. With no football match due to the international break he and former Posh star Joe Lewis took to the river’s backwaters and were rewarded with a brace apiece.
Rowe bagged the best fish of the day estimated at around the 5lb mark taken on luncheon meat.
I have to admit to being a big Peterborough United fan so it’s with a little bias on my part that I am going to give him my catch of the week award.
Catching a single barbel is not easy, two in a session is very good indeed.
