One in, one out as Ramone McCrae joins Posh

THERE was a hectic day of transfer activity at London Road yesterday with one arrival, one departure and the possibility of another player leaving London Road in the near future.Posh staged their second raid in four days on Blue Square Premier League club Crawley Town by capturing highly-prized midfielder Ramone McCrae on a two-year contract. Posh signed 6ft 5ins striker Danny Mills from Crawley on Friday.

And Posh transfer guru Barry Fry then managed to secure a season-long loan for striker Scott Rendell to League Two side Torquay. Rendell played for Cambridge United against Torquay in the Blue Square Premier League play-off final at Wembley last season.

Fry has also agreed a fee with Torquay for central defender Kieran Charnock, a move dependent on the player agreeing personal terms.

Fry said: "We have accepted a bid from Torquay for Charnock plus plenty of add ons should he be a success down there. Torquay have offered him a two-year contract, but he has yet to agree to the move.

"Scott did originally turn Torquay down. He's not keen on a permanent move there, but he has agreed to join on a year-long loan for which we will receive a fee."

Fry has now secured the departure of seven of the 12 players placed on the transfer list in the summer. It will become eight if Charnock leaves, while unwanted striker Kwesi Appiah is currently training with League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge.

Danny Blanchett, Sergio Torres and Rene Howe are the others players Posh are keen to lose off their wage bill.

McCrae was watched by Posh and a host of other Championship and Football League clubs making his first-team debut for Crawley in a friendly against Brighton on Friday night. Crystal Palace and Bristol City were also believed to be chasing his signature.

McCrae was finally persuaded to make London Road his destination by Posh boss Darren Ferguson. McCrae said: "I was only told on Saturday morning that three Championship clubs wanted to sign me.

"I considered each of them carefully, but Darren Ferguson spoke to me when I was at Bognor Regis on Saturday and my mind was made up.

"I have signed for two years and it may be longer if I do well. I am best mates with Danny Mills who joined Posh last Friday so it made even more sense.

"I was so jealous when he went to Posh and although I wanted him as a mate to do very well for himself I was wishing it was me."

Posh have paid undisclosed fees for both McCrae and Mills with plenty of bonuses for Crawley should the players prosper at London Road.

Crawley boss Steve Evans was delighted for McCrae. He said: "It is a fantastic opportunity for Romone, especially joining a club where the manager believes in a style of total football.

"I knew once he had spoken to Darren on Saturday where he wanted to go, but I asked him to consider all the options available to him and then to sleep on it. I was delighted when he told me on Sunday that he would like to join Peterborough United."
