MOTORSPORT: Promising Peterborough driver Alexander Sims was in action at the Hungarian Grand Prix meeting in Budapest over the weekend.Twice a year the International Formula Master (IFM) Series runs alongside a Formula 1 meeting and Sims (21) received a special invitation to take part at the Hungaroring circuit.
Sims, Italy's Samuele Buttarelli and New Zealander Earl Bamber became the first drivers to join the Master Series under a new development scheme known as the IFM Talent Support Programme.
And Sims, who currently competes in the Formula 3 Euroseries after two impressive years in Formula Renault UK, once again showed the sort of outstanding form that won him the highly-regarded McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the year accolade last year.
Driving a new car he'd never seen before and on a circuit which he'd never raced before, Sims overcame some gearbox problems to finish seventh in Friday's qualifying race.
In Saturday's main race in the series, Sims once again caught the eye as he finished in a highly plausible fourth place and that prompted the BBC Formula 1 crew to interview him.
Standing in the pit lane in front of the McLaren Mercedes garages, he chatted live on BBC with Jake Humphrey and David Coulthard about plans for his motor racing future.
Despite having half his front wing knocked off at the start of the second race in the Series yesterday, which made braking and cornering difficult, Sims again brought the car home in an impressive fourth place.
Afterwards Sims commented: "I have to say a very big thank-you to the International Formula Master Series Talent Support Programme for giving me the opportunity this weekend.
"The team, engineer and mechanics have done a great job to get a car from new to race fit in one week.
"I am disappointed as I felt we could have won yesterday's race had we not had damage. We have all learnt a lot and I am looking forward to the next race with them at Spa Francorchamps at the end of August."
