Lord Burghley stun nine-man Jubilee

LORD Burghley turned the formbook upside down to dramatically move into the Hereward Cup semi-finals by defeating Jubilee North End in a clash of the Sunday morning titans.Just a fortnight ago the Stamford stars were smashed 8-0 by Jubilee in a crucial Premier Division meeting – but Shaun Greetham's men proved that was a freak result by running out 3-2 winners after extra-time when they renewed rivalries yesterday.

Jubilee led 2-0 at one stage thanks to goals from Mark Baines and substitute Jason Spalding, but the city side were reduced to nine men as Burghley mounted a rousing revival.

Referee Alan Swann sent off Jubilee man Ricky Speechley (two cautions) as the Burghley boys pulled themselves level thanks to a brace from Richard Thompson.

Then Swann, a reporter, gave Burghley a penalty and dismissed Jubilee keeper Marcin Lubniewski for violent conduct, but the game took another twist as outfield player Darren Fogg took over between the sticks and kept out Chris MacRoyal's spot-kick.

But Robbie Blowers made sure Burghley came out on top by hitting the decisive goal in the second period of extra-time to settle a contest full of talking points.

Burghley player-boss Greetham said: "There was a big change in attitude and obviously a huge difference in the outcome as well.

"Our aim was to avoid embarrassing ourselves as we had done a couple of weeks earlier and we put in a really sound performance.

"I have always known we could give Jubilee a good game if we perform well and this result proves we are a lot more closesly matched than the 8-0 scoreline from the last game.

"Even when we were behind I felt we were the better team, but we could have done without missing the last minute penalty.

"It is always a worry to miss a chance like that, but we got there in the end."

Lord Burghley also have a PFA Senior Cup semi-final on the horizon and are still in with a good chance of lifting the Premier Division title in their debut top-flight season.

Meanwhile Jubilee boss Scott Stainsby was left to bemoan two key injuries and those two dismissals.

He said: "Having Jamie Graham and Chris Garwell come off injured in the first half was not ideal.

"And with the decisions that were being made you sensed it wasn't going to be our day.

"There was only one bad tackle in the game and one of their players made that. The referee should stick to writing!"

Deeping Athletic will meet Burghley in the semis after accounting for EMAP 4-3 with a late comeback.

Deeping saw a 2-0 lead thanks to a couple of Anthony Graves goal disappear into a 3-2 deficit and their prospects appeared bleak when Craig Chamberlain was sent off for dissent and Graves missed a penalty.

But Carl Griffiths fired Deeping level and Graves completed his hat-trick with the winner.

Netherton will meet Powerleague in a battle of two Premier Division teams in the other semi.

Both teams successfully negotiated lower-level opponents at the last eight stage yesterday.

A couple of Jon Harrison goals helped Netherton defeat Limetree 5-3 while Powerleague comfortably overcame Scarletts 4-1.

Marco Sementa put the final gloss on that triumph with a stunning 35 yard goal in the closing stages after a Steven Shaw double and a Lee Goodes strike had put the Stanground side in control.

Netherton Reserves launched a scorching comeback to dump Cherry Tree out of the McCains Cup.

Goals from Paul Oxbury, Michael Halfhide and Gurpal Singh turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 success as the Netherton triumphed in this quarter-final.

Craig Keenan cracked a hat-trick as Brotherhood Works powered past West Town 5-3, while Parkway made light work of Fenland Police by advancing as 4-0 winners.

Thomas Cook complete the semi-final line-up after a couple of Dave Weston goals inspired a 3-2 win over Werrington Village.
