Posh striker and fans favourite Ken Charlery was sold by Barry Fry to Stockport County for £100,000 20 years ago.

ICE HOCKEY: Peterborough Pirates beat Murrayfield 11-7 to win the British Premier League Shield. Darren Cotton scored a hat-trick and brother Jon netted twice.

FOOTBALL: Ortonians moved 18 points clear at the top of the Peterborough League Premier Division after a Michael Dudley goal gave them a 1-0 win over Leverington.

POSH: Youth team players Chris Cleaver, David Billington and Mark McKeever all shone for the first team in a 1-1 draw at Crewe. Barry Fry’s side remained deep in relegation trouble in Division Two.

POSH: Fry sold striker Ken Charlery to Stockport County for £100,000 and winger David Morrison to Leyton Orient for £25,000.

SWIMMING: Sixteen year-old King’s School pupil Rachel Burgess won six titles at the Cambridgeshire County Championships.

RUGBY: Borough beat Coalville 21-10 to stave off relegation from Midlands East Division One. Schoolboy winger Dave Brudnell and prop Graham Coakes scored tries.

HOCKEY: Tina Hings netted three times for Peterborough Town Ladies in a 5-0 win over Letchworth. Town finished third in East Super League.

SPEEDWAY: Martin Rogers’ young Petrerborough Panthers side were hammered 52-26 at Milton Keynes Knights. Kevin Hawkins top-scored for the city side with eight points.

FOOTBALL: ICA reached their fourth cup final of the season when beating Northampton Venturians 3-1 in a Northants Sunday Vase semi-final. Giovanni Nespoli (2) and Mario Ippolito got their goals.

FOOTBALL: Pip Seaton scored a hat-trick for Hospital as they closed in on the Sunay Combination League Division Two title with a 4-0 win over Comet.

HOCKEY: Top city mixed team Bretton Beavers beat Colworth House 5-0 thanks to goals by Steve Gregory (2) and Steve Jackson (3).

POSH: Noel Cantwell’s promotion-chasing side suffered a setback when losing 1-0 at Division Four basement boys Torquay. Posh remained fourth in the table behind Northampton, Preston and Southend.

FOOTBALL: Dave Bonner hit a late winner for Stamford as they beat Spalding 2-1 to reach the Scarber Cup final.

DARTS: Local trio Ken Summers, Dennis Harbour and Trevor Nurse won the £1,200 Nations Triples Cup.

40 YEARS AGO

SQUASH: Defending Northants county champion Tony Elsby from Eastfield Squash Club lost his title when beaten 9-7, 8-10, 2-9, 9-2, 9-6 in the final by Dallington’s Peter Bennett.

DARTS: John Hunt from the Halcyon beat Roy Easton from the Golden Lion 2-0 in the Watney Tuesday League singles final. In the doubles John Wilson and Phil Hales (Farmers Arms) beat Nev Fountain and Vic Keen (Golden Lion) 2-0.

FOOTBALL: Phorpres beat King’s Lynn Reserves 2-1 in a PFA Senior Cup semi-final with goals by Dennis McPartlin and John Richardson.

POSH: Two great goals by David Gregory earned Posh a 2-0 win over Division Three title favourites Brighton in front of a London Road crowd of 6,852.

HOCKEY: Teenage winger Gail Prosser was in sparkling form for Saracens. She scored two goals and made two goals in a 4-2 win over Gosberton. Rosemary Pilgrim scored the other two goals.

BOXING: Dave ‘Boy’ Green from Chatteris stopped John H. Stracey in the 10th round of their world title eliminator in front of a full house of 10,600 at the Empire Pool, Wembley. It earned him a fight with world champion Carlos Palomino from Mexico.

50 YEARS AGO

POSH: Own goals cost both the Posh first team and the reserves. Ron Cooper put through his own net late on to give Oxford a 3-2 win in a Third Division game at London Road while Jim Walker’s own goal gave Nottingham Forest Reserves a 1-0 Football Combination victory over Posh Reserves at the City Ground.

ATHLETICS: Leicester runner Ron Grove won the annual ‘Round The City’ road race. Best-placed local in eighth spot was Bill Yale from Peterborough AC. Philip Ward of PAC won the junior boys race beating Steve Fountain of Western Star Youth Club by 10 seconds.

FOOTBALL: Bourne beat Holbeach 1-0 in the big local derby in the UCL on Easter Monday thanks to a George Campbell goal.

HOCKEY: Peterborough Town reached the final of the big Easter international tournament in Norwich only to lose 1-0 to Norwich Satellites. John Day was outstanding throughout for Town. Two of Town’s best results were a 4-0 victory over Dutch side Eechtrop thanks to goals by John Mark (2) and Dave Currie (2) and a 2-0 win against French side Rouen through strikes by Peter Stimpson and Paddy Trevor.
