The last 40 years of sport in the city... from the scrapbook: Pictured is the Old Deaconians cricket team before their win in September 1992 in the annual match against the President’s XI.

Old D’s batted first and made 135-9 with Paul Bowes top-scoring on 55. The President’s XI were then all out for 114 with Alan Butler taking 4-13.

10 years ago:

SPEEDWAY: Sam Tesar and Shane Parker led the way for Panthers with 13 points apiece in a 51-39 win over Ipswich.

GOLF: Peterborough Milton’s Richard Cole won the Northants Senior Championship title at Stoke Albany with a round of 73.

POSH: Goals by Andy Clarke and Adam Newton earned Barry Fry’s side a 2-2 draw at Division Two leaders Wigan.

FOOTBALL: Deeping beat Boston Town 2-1 in the FA Vase thanks to an extra-time strike by Tuncay Korkmaz.

POSH: The Under 19s, managed by John Morling, won 7-1 at Southend with goals by Stuart Cobb (3), Ryan Semple (2), Sean St Ledger and Killean Brennan.

ICE HOCKEY: Phantoms won both weekend games in the English Premier League. Russell Coleman scored a hat-trick in an 11-4 home win over Kingston and then Darren Cotton did likewise in a 6-3 victory at Swindon.

CRICKET: Shah Nawaz Adeel took 5-21 for Peterborough Town as they hammerd Old Wellingburians by nine wickets in their final fixture of the season.

SPEEDWAY: Panthers rider Magnus Zetterstrom won the European Championship title in Sweden.

20 years ago:

TENNIS: Deeping schoolteacher Anita Cordery won three Peterborough Tennis Club titles. She won the singles by beating Lynne Barber 6-4, 6-0 and then won the ladies doubles with Barber and the mixed doubles with Ashley Martin.

SPEEDWAY: Jason Crump led the way with 17 points as Panthers beat Berwick 60-30 to go top of Division Two.

RUGBY: Borough beat Stewart & Lloyds 16-6 with Andy Croson scoring their only try. FOOTBALL: Kenny Venters fired a hat-trick for Perkins as in a 7-0 Peterborough League Premier Division win over BRAD.

FOOTBALL: Chris Maile scored a magnificent seven for Aztecs as they crushed Posh Supporters 9-1 in Division One of the Sunday Afternoon League.

POSH: Posh won for the first time in five Division One outings when edging home 2-1 at Barnsley. Worrell Sterling set up the first goal for Tony Adcock and then scored the second himself.

ATHLETICS: Nene Valley Harrier Robert Thickpenny won the UK Under 17 title with 4.05m.

RUGBY: Thorney delivered a shock in the first round of the Provincial Insurance Cup by beating Melton Mowbray 10-8. Chris Beeby had a superb game, creating Thorney’s try for Steve Williams and adding a conversion and penalty.

30 years ago:

FOOTBALL: Former Hotpoint players Martin Fitzjohn and Steve Thorpe did the bulk of the damage in a 12-1 Junior Cup win for Brotherhoods against their old club. Fitzjohn scored scored four and Thorpe three.

FOOTBALL: Ex-Posh men Peter Morris, John Cozens (2) and Gordon Hodgson were on target in British Rail’s 10-0 destruction of Longthorpe in a Mid-Anglia League match.

HOCKEY: Skipper Linda McLean scored four goals as Peterborough City Ladies beat St Ives 5-0.

GOLF: Ian McCrae won Peterborough Milton’s DK Firman club championship trophy in style. he beat Dave Elliott 10&9 in the 36-hole final.

ROWING: Pete Essex won two events at Peterborough City Rowing Club’s annual regatta - the pairs with Steve Chambers and the eights with Neil Cousins, Richard Everitt, Chris Marriott, Bob Bickle, Graham Barks, John Canton, Susan Benton and cox Robin Lobley.

CRICKET: Former Peterborough Town skipper Mike Taylor showed Nassington’s youngsters the way by winning their single wicket competition.

FOOTBALL: Paul Bryant scored a hat-trick for Peterborough Boys Under 14s in a 7-1 win over South Hunts. Also on target were Robert Harradine, Nigel George and Gary Clipston (2).

40 years ago:

ATHLETICS: Jackie Stokoe of Peterborough AC won the Beds and Hunts women’s pentathlon title with 3,446 points.

HOC KEY: Peterborough Hockey Club started their Eastern League campaign with a 2-0 win over Bedford thanks to goals by Tony Huggins and Jimmy Wheeler.

FOOTBALL: Whittlesey Dynamos slammed Nassington 22-0 in a Sunday League match. Mick Fallon scored eight and Alan Shaw and Billy Shepperson both hit hat-tricks.

FOOTBALL: The Peterborough League Division Three (North) match between Newborough and Oundle Town Reserves ended in a 7-7 draw. Les Harmston scored four for Newborough and Tim Lee three for Oundle.

FOOTBALL: Keith Best netted four times and Rod Chapman, Len Williams and Ossi Pizzi scored hat-tricks as Development Corporation beat Hotpoint 18-2 in a Sunday Combination League game.

RUGBY: Peterborough seconds slaughtered Nottinghamians seconds 92-0. Rod Maplethorpe scored 32 of the points with two tries and 12 conversions and the other try-scorers were Ian Toates (3), Curly Hodson (3), Richard Ireson (2), Phil Elmer (2), Dick Little (2), Roger Parker, Robert McCulloch and Tony Barry.
