Howard Forinton had earlier opened the scoring for Posh.RUGBY UNION: Borough eased their relegation fears in Midlands East Division One by winning 24-12 at Stoneygate. Mez Merrygold, Rich Martin and Pete Brudnell claimed tries with Martin kicking the rest of the points.
HOCKEY: Gary Hales and Hugh Owen were on target, but a last-minute goal enabled Oxford University to pinch a 2-2 draw with Peterborough Town in National League Division Two.
FOOTBALL: Nicky Law, James Horner and an own goal gave Perkins a surprise 3-2 win at leaders Eye in the Peterborough Premier Division. Steve Paling and Ash Favell scored for Eye who had Steve Zenchuk sent off following an exchange of words with Perkins skipper Alex Brown.
HOCKEY: Andy McKenna of Spalding and Tina Hings of Peterborough Town each won a new stick for their goalscoring exploits from East League sponsors Slazenger.
BOXING: Yaxley's Liam Maltby won a controversial points verdict against Northampton's David Kehoe in a light-welterweight bout at the Moat House.
ICE HOCKEY: Lewis Buckman scored four goals on his debut for Peterborough Fen Tigers in a 9-5 victory over Chelmsford in the Under 19 Southern Conference. James Elwood, Russell Coleman, Lewis Wooding and Fraser Hendry were also on target.
20 YEARS AGO
WATER POLO: City of Peterborough Swimming Club won their second East Midlands League match in a row (which followed 11 straight defeats). Spalding were seen off 8-6 thanks to goals from Peter Wright (4), Richard Baker (2), Dave Piper and Ian Caville.
FOOTBALL: Striker David Longhurst rocked Posh by demanding a transfer and manager Mark Lawrenson immediately stated that he wouldn't stand in his way.
BOXING: City fighter Gary De Roux chalked up his first win in more than a year as he produced a second round knockout of Welsh featherweight champion James Hunter in Middlesbrough.
SQUASH: Peterborough Town recorded their third 5-0 Cambs League win in succession to maintain second place in the table. Colin Fisher, Chris Adams, Chris Davey, Ken Muse and Mark Paulson were the ruthless Town men.
FOOTBALL: Goalkeeper Tony Godden was in outstanding form as Posh held high-flying Carlisle to a goalless draw at Brunton Park. Godden's heroics included a 76th minute penalty save to keep out David Miller's effort.
RUGBY UNION: Borough retained the Hunts & Peterborough County Cup with a 10-6 final win at St Neots. Danny Kitching and Paul Freeman scored the Borough tries.
ICE HOCKEY: Peterborough Pirates were hammered 17-3 to make it nine successive Heneiken Premier League defeats. Brian Meharry, Paul Hand and Kevin King claimed the consolation goals.
30 YEARS AGO
FOOTBALL: England and Spurs striker Martin Chivers was in a Brighton side beaten 3-0 by Posh in a reserve team fixture at London Road. Dave Syrett claimed his first Posh goal, while Campbell Chapman and Trevor Quow also netted.
SQUASH: Neville Keir recorded his first ever win over county legend Duncan Colquhoun to help Peterborough Town to a 5-0 win over Cambs Hotel in the National Audi Mixed competition. John Mills and Brian Abel also recorded fine wins while Heather Simpson and Joan Stapleton received walkovers.
RUGBY UNION: Huntingdon kept hold of the Hunts & Peterborough County Cup after a nail-biting 7-6 win over Borough. Mick Daykin slotted two penalties for Borough, but was off target with several other shots at goal in the blustery conditions.
HOCKEY: Sawtry stretched their unbeaten home record to three months when drawing a mixed game against St Neots 2-2. Norman Saltmarsh and John Smith scored for Sawtry.
FOOTBALL: Franco Piergianni struck four times and Phil Marchant added a hat-trick as British Rail hammered Sainsburys 8-1 in the Mid-Anglia League second division.
FOOTBALL: Goals from Campbell Chapman, Mickey Gynn and Trevor Slack saw Posh into the third round of the FA Youth Cup with a 3-1 win over Sutton Coldfield.
DARTS: Swiss Cottage beat Fenman 5-4 in a title battle in the John Smith's League First Division. Swiss winners were Dave Brewster, Tony Warrington, Matt Watson, John Todd and Pete Basley, while George Fox, Richard James, Neil Seekins and Dave Grist claimed legs for Fenmen.
40 YEARS AGO
FOOTBALL: Bobby Moss scored the goal as Posh drew 1-1 in a Division Four match at Exeter, but a good point was put into perspective when Eddie Holliday broke his leg.
FOOTBALL: Only 15 of 38 scheduled Peterborough League matches survived a severe frost, but Westwood maintained their promotion push in Division One with a 2-1 win over Glinton. Ian Day scored the winner three minutes from time after team-mate Mick Lansell had equalised a Rolph Taylor goal for Glinton.
TABLE TENNIS: Peterborough drew 5-5 with Bedford in a South East Midlands League match at Alma Road. David Obee, Colin Dale, Roy Fisher and Don Megginson were the city men in action.
FOOTBALL: Young central defender Chris Turner had a tough time against a Chelsea forward line which included Alan Birchenall and Tommy Baldwin as Posh Reserves went down 4-2 at London Road. Colin Garwood and Steve Froude scored for Posh.
HOCKEY: Triple S beat the cold snap and friendly rivals St Neots in a mixed match. Dave Sharp (2), Peter Woodham and Ted Drake claimed the goals.
HOCKEY: Hunts & Peterborough named 11 Peterborough Town players for a county fixture at Essex under the captaincy of Tony Huggins. The team was: Hughes, Lake, Day, Sergeant, Huggins, McGregor, Lander, Efford, Gill, Ross, Long.
BASKETBALL: The Peterborough Jets lost for the first time in Northants Division One, going down 103-79 at Northamptonshire Dragons.
