10 YEARS AGO: 1988 SPEEDWAY: Brett Woodifield and Glenn Cunningham earned Panthers' first piece of silverware of the season by winning the only title the experts reckoned the club didn't stand a chance in – the Premier League Pairs at Newport. They beat Exeter in the final.

SPEEDWAY: Brett Woodifield and Glenn Cunningham earned Panthers' first piece of silverware of the season by winning the only title the experts reckoned the club didn't stand a chance in – the Premier League Pairs at Newport. They beat Exeter in the final.FOOTBALL: Stamford delivered a devastating late salvo to win the first competitive match of their season. They beat Lincoln United 4-2 in the Lincs Senior Cup after Kevin McGuire, Mark Clifford, Dave Taylor and Andy Furnell all netted in the final seven minutes.

GREYHOUNDS: Hot favourite Spoonbill Snowey romped to a clear victory in the final of the Peterborough Derby, coming within a whisker of breaking the Fengate track record.

BOWLS: Tiny 10 year-old Ean Morton turned the record books upside down when becoming the youngest player to appear in the Northants Bowling Federation finals – and he promptly helped his Peterborough Rail team book their place in the national finals with an 18-11 win over Yaxley.

CRICKET: Former Leicestershire pro Gordon Parsons went out in style in his last match for Bourne before moving to South Africa. He thumped 54 before taking 6-58 as Bourne beat Long Sutton by 10 runs in the South Lincs League.

POSH: Barry Fry ordered the Premiership predators to stay away after national newspaper reports linked Newcastle with a 4 million move for Matthew Etherington and suggested Liverpool were lining up a six-figure bid for Matthew Gill.

20 YEARS AGO: 1988

ATHLETICS: King of the throws Neil German had a successful outing as Cambs won the annual Hibberd Trophy clash against Suffolk, Beds and Norfolk. He won the shot putt and hammer as well as coming second in the discus.

CRICKET: Jonathan Boyce's half-century topped a solid batting effort as Peterborough Town saw off Wolverton by 20 runs in the Northants Premier Division.

FOOTBALL: Spalding held Conference side Kettering to a goalless friendly draw at the Sir Halley Stewart Field. Kettering fielded the former Posh quartet of Lil Fuccillo, Les Lawrence, Kevin Shoemake and Mark Nightingale.

CRICKET: Spalding pace ace Peter Sly bagged a cracking 8-70 as his side crushed bottom club Grantham by six wickets in the South Lincs Premier Division.

SPEEDWAY: The jeers turned to cheers for new Panthers chief David Hawkins as the city side racked up their biggest win of the season in his first match in sole charge. Craig Hodgson and Ian Barney (both 14) led a 67-29 rout of Rye House.30 YEARS AGO: 1978

SPEEDWAY: Panthers bagged a second successive Premier League fours title at their Alwalton stomping ground – despite being without three of their top riders through injury. But the line-up of Dave Gooderham, Nigel Couzens, Tim Hunt (stepping in for Brian Clark) and Nigel Flatman overcame Stoke, Ellesmere Port and Canterbury in the final.

BOWLS: South Ward man John Dickenson notched a Northants Bowling Federation double, winning the two-wood singles and then joining forces with partner Vic Garner in the pairs.

POSH: The club went down 3-1 to Charlton in their first summer friendly at London Road despite a cracking free-kick strike from Tommy Robson.

ROWING: Peterborough City Rowing Club were able to toast a new record after the Junior Under 16 quad of Andrew Mansfield, Simon Abbott, Geoffrey Khan and Chris Parkin chalked up the club's 28th success of the year in the St Neots Regatta.

CRICKET: A useful all-round display by Peterborough Town man Tony Howorth helped Hunts draw with a strong Northants seconds side. Howorth followed a four-wicket display with a crucial knock of 35.

FOOTBALL: Ken Jinks grabbed a couple of goals as Dave Snart's Stanground side won the Warmington six-a-side competition. Franco Piergianni also netted in the 3-0 final win over Kings Cliffe.

40 YEARS AGO: 1968

CRICKET: A splendid unbeaten innings of 52 by Tony Howorth, who with Chris Beeton shared a fifth wicket partnership of 92, saved Peterborough Town from Northants County League defeat against top-of-the-table Rushden. Rushden made 195-5 declared and Town were 158-6 at the close.

FOOTBALL: Youngster John Rudd was the star of the show for Wisbech in their 3-0 friendly win over Wellingborough Town at Fenland Park. He scored two of the goals and showed some deft footwork. Dudley Branson scored the other Wisbech goal.

CRICKET: Castor lost top spot in the Peterborough League after being humbled by Postals. Castor were shot out for 61 with Gordon Toseland taking 5-19 off 14 overs.

CRICKET: Mitchells took over top spot from Castor by thrashing Hotpoint. Theo Wickham cracked a magnificent 87 as Mitchells declared on 147-2 and then George Ringrose took 6-7 as Hotpoint were dismissed for 50.

CRICKET: Derek Lenton took 6-11 off 13.5 overs as BSC thrashed Co-op.

SHOOTING: Farmer Max Freeman of Tongue End, Spalding, won the English Open Grand Prix for the second year running at a clay-pigeon shoot at Bisley.
