30 YEARS AGO - 1978: FOOTBALL: Posh recorded their first Division Three win of 1978 as goals from Gary Sargeant and Trevor Anderson secured a 2-1 success over Jack Charlton's Sheffield Wednesday.

FOOTBALL: Posh recorded their first Division Three win of 1978 as goals from Gary Sargeant and Trevor Anderson secured a 2-1 success over Jack Charlton's Sheffield Wednesday.CYCLING: Seventeen year-old Steve Clarke was celebrating the National Clarion best all-rounder junior award. Clarke's brother Ian, another Fenland Clarion member, finished fourth in the juvenile category.
FOOTBALL: Posh sold veteran left-back Jeff Lee to Kettering of the Southern League for 3,000. Winger Andy Rogers was expected to follow for a similar fee.
FOOTBALL: Gary Scotcher scored and was then sent off as Blackstones lost 2-1 to Yaxley British Legion in the Peterborough Senior Cup. He was dismissed after clashing with Yaxley player-manager Andy Jones, who was also ordered off.
RUGBY UNION: Captain Selwyn Goss scored a late try for Borough as they became East Midlands Champions following a 4-4 draw at Stockwood Park. Borough were awarded the trophy as they were the away team in the final.
25 YEARS AGO - 1983:
FOOTBALL: Posh sold star striker Robbie Cooke to local rivals Cambridge United for a fee in the region of 15,000. Cooke had cracked 57 goals in two seasons for the city side.
DARTS: Peterborough's hopes of taking the county silverware were dealt a major blow. The city outfit went down 6-3 to Newmarket in the Cambridgeshire Super League with only Nev Fountain, Ken Summers and Bob Dawson managing to sink an arrow into the double.
CYCLING: Steve Brooks again proved himself to be the main man in the saddle at Peterborough Cycling Club. Brooks retained the 'Hardriders 25' title by the narrowest of margins, pipping handicap winner Dave Hitchens by a second.
BADMINTON: Local aces Heather Simpson, Sharon Leonard and Jackie Willmott of Peterborough Town all shone as part of the Cambridgeshire side that beat Lincolnshire and South of Scotland in nerve-jangling play-offs to avoid Inter-Counties League relegation.
SPEEDWAY: Panthers signed promising young rider Mike Spinks and announced they were closing in on locally-based talent Brian Clark. Another Panthers racer, Andy Buck, blasted riders threatening to strike over new pay rates.
SNOOKER: Former world champion Terry Griffiths wowed a crowd of 350 when putting on an exhibition to officially mark the opening of the Court Billiards and Snooker Centre in Bretton.
20 YEARS AGO
ICE HOCKEY: Pirates contrived to turn in their worst performance of the season in their biggest game. The city side lost their crunch relegation clash with Streatham 7-4.
FOOTBALL: Posh boss Noel Cantwell issued a public apology in the wake of a 2-1 defeat by lowly Hereford, witnessed by just 2,065 hardy souls on a harsh winter night at London Road. Mick Gooding gave Posh the lead but things soon turned sour.
RACING: Market Deeping trainer George Vergette picked up his first winner for four years when Perroquet – ridden by his daughter-in-law Helen – took a three-mile novice chase at Fakenham.
HOCKEY: Martin Collcott was in the wars as Peterborough Town slumped to a 3-2 derby defeat at Cambridge. Collcott was hit in the cheek by a stick and clattered under the eye by the ball.
DARTS: Peterborough thrower Peter Evison had 2,500 Scotsmen baying for his blood after defeating their national treasure Jocky Wilson. Evison claimed a 3-0 win over Wilson while helping England defeat the Auld Enemy to retain the Home Internationals crown.
10 YEARS AGO - 1998:
FOOTBALL: Manager Barry Fry questioned his team's desire as Posh continued their slide down the Third Division table with a 1-0 home defeat by Sammy McIlroy's Macclesfield.
RUGBY UNION: Borough stormed into the semi-finals of the East Midlands Cup with a 31-17 thrashing of Northampton Men's Own. Pete Brudnell, Stuart Morgan, Michael Royal, John Griffin and John Sismey scored the Borough tries with Chris Jones booting the rest of the points.
FOOTBALL: Sisters Zoe and Rebecca Ansell hit 11 goals apiece as Holbeach Under 15s hammered Bourne 34-0 in a girls' game. Helen Slater scored the other 12 goals!
SNOOKER: Karen Corr from Bourne won the Scottish Open with a 4-1 final win over Kelly Fisher.
HOCKEY: Peterborough Town moved to within a point of the East Premier A Division title and the National League play-offs with a 6-2 drubbing of Crostyx. Mark Britton (2), Paul Tancred (2), Gary Hales and Steve Gregory scored the Town goals.
ATHLETICS: Peterborough Athletic Club's Rachel Stone, Stephanie Hornsby and Stephanie Cooper won the National Under 15 Cross-Country Relay Championships at Mansfield. Clubmate Aileen Wilson also celebrated a gold medal in the AAA Junior Indoor Championships in Birmingham.
FOOTBALL: Barry Fry called youth development officer Kit Carson 'a genius' as he offered him a 10-year deal.
