40 YEARS AGO CRICKET: The Peterborough League XI were hammered by seven wickets by Warboys in a Smith Barry Cup match. Gerald Baxter top scored for the League XI as they were skittled for just 127 and then Francis Brand hammerd an unbeaten 45 as Warboys raced to 129-3.

Gerald Baxter top scored for the League XI as they were skittled for just 127 and then Francis Brand hammerd an unbeaten 45 as Warboys raced to 129-3.CRICKET: Ramsey powered through to the Jaidka Cup final by drubbing Mitchells by nine wickets at Crawthorne Road. Mitchells were all out for 49 with John Ford (5-28) and John Ayres (5-16) doing the damage.

CRICKET: Wisbech player Tony Shippey made 94 for the Minor Counties XI against the West Indies. He hit nine fours and smacked spinner Lance Gibbs for two mighty sixes. The game ended in a draw.

CRICKET: Ron Titman took 5-9, including a hat-trick, for Newborough as South Witham were shot out for 22 in a friendly. Newborough had made 78.

FOOTBALL: The Peterborough Sunday Morning League management committee came under attack for doubling league entry fees to 3.

GOLF: Burghley Park junior Richard Palmer hit a hole in one at the Stamford course - at the par three 13th with a six-iron.

ATHLETICS: Mick Epton starred for Western Star in the Northants Boys Clubs Athletics Championships at the Embanbkment, winning both the junior 1500m and 3000m.

GOLF: Dave Whitehead won Burghley Park?s longest drive competition for the second year running with a distance of 261 yards.

CRICKET: Newborough bowlers Brian Joyce (8-23) and Trevor Wagg (6-7) were in great form in Stamford Sheild victories over Ketton and Williamson/Cliff respectively.

SPEEDWAY: Panthers ace Brian Clark was ruled out for at least two weeks after damaging his shoulder in a crash at Crayford.

WATER-SKIING: Peterborough?s David Hutchinson finished fifth in the second round of the European Championships in Belgium.

ATHLETICS: Walton School?s Neil German was awarded the best boys performance trophy at the Cambridgeshire Schools Championships after breaking the championship record in the intermediate boys shot by 61cms with a throw of 14.21m.

ROWING: Steve Irving was star of the show for Peterborough City Rowing Club at their annual two-day regatta, winning Senior A and Senior B single sculls races.

CRICKET: Castor?s Eddie Pugh smashed an unbeatren 128 in a Peterborough League win over Thomas Cook.

ATHLETICS: Eight local athletes were selected to compete for Cambridgeshire at the prestigious English Schools Championships. They were Neil German (Walton), Tony Jarman (Eastholm), Paul Meadows (AMVC), Darren Cooper (Eastholm), Karl Eve (Deeping), Marie Tweedie (John Mansfield), Alison Lumb (Deacon?s) and Philip Lumb (AMVC).

CRICKET: James Dobney took 6-37 as Peterborough Town seconds hammered Stony Stratford seconds by seven wickets in the Northants League.

CRICKET: The next day it was Peter Dale who stole the headlines for Peterborough Towns seconds, hitting an unbeaten 134 in a 162-run win over Spalding in the South Lincs League.

CRICKET: Castor?s Bruce Pell made 101 out of 237-9 as his side beat Horncastle by 67 runs in a South Lincs League match.

CRICKET: Brian Howard took 7-19 for Peterborough Town?s first team in a 10-wicket Jaidka Cup win over Old Deaconians.

CRICKET: Market Deeping veterans Brian Holdich (107) and Henry Roberts (102) set a new Rutland League Reserve Division opening partnership record of 216 against Stewart & Lloyds.

CYCLING: Peterborough Cycling Club ace Jeremy Harrison won the South East Midlands Road Race Championship.

GOLF: Richard James, brother of Ryder Cup star Mark, won the 0-9 handicap at Burghley Park after returning a net 141 over the 36 holes.

DOMINOES: Polish Club?s John Gill and Bob Haigh won the Peterborough Clubs League?s pairs competition.

POSH: Local foursome Bobby Smith, Hamish Curtis, Tim Jones and Shaun Roberts are signed by Posh on associate schoolboy forms.

10 YEARS AGO

POOL: Stanground shopkeeper Steve Singh earned a wildcard entry into the inaugural World Nine-Ball Pool Championship

HOCKEY: One of only two remaining ladies? hockey clubs in the city folded. Saracens blamed dwindling membership on their demise after 40 years.

BOXING: City trainer Kevin Sanders split with former world super-featherweight champion Patrick Mullings. It was as a result of a disagreement during a recent fight.

ROWING: Youngsters Aran Truss and Karl Stapleton were the start Peterborough City Rowing Club performers when completing a hat-trick of wins at their Spring Regatta.

CRICKET: Dave Foster walloped six sixes and six fours during a whirlwind 92 off only 39 balls as Wisbech drew with Granta in the Cambs League.

POSH: Player-coach Steve Castle was a transfer target for Third Division rivals Halifax and Leyton Orient. Ady Boothroyd was appointed reserve team manager.

SPEEDWAY: Panthers man Mario Jirout splashed out 4,000 on improved engines after tumbling tamely out of the first two Grand Prix of the season.

MOTORSPORT: City hospital worker Rick Long claimed a first and second place in the Isle of Man TT Sidecar races.

ICE HOCKEY: Peterborough Pirates pulled off a major coup by bringing Canadian star Doug McEwen back to the club 10 years after he scored a magnificent 216 points for them in his debut British season.
