Longthrope Tennis Club’s teenage talent Thalia Martin is the Leicestershire Open Ladies singles champion for 2015.

The 18 year-old fought back from a set down to beat final opponent Maria Pandya 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 (champions tie break) in Leicester to claim the biggest win of her promising career.

Martin had beaten Moira Johnson 6-4, 6-2 in the semi-final of the week-long event.

Coach Marcie Winlock said: “I’m very pleased with this performance and it shows that we are doing something right with her tennis.

“Thalia showed very good composure under lots of pressure in the final.

“She showed very good mental strength and coped very well with the pressure of her first major final.

Martin is a former Cambridgeshire Under 16 junior champion.

She won that title in 2013, the same year that club-mate, and fellow Jack Hunt School pupil, Maki Zivotic won the under 14 boys title.

Zivotic, who is also coached by Winlock, played well to reach the final of an open event in Cambridge recently.
