Chatteris cueman Joe Perry made a positive start to the new snooker season with a 5-3 win over Jamie Burnett in the first round of the Australian Open in Bendigo, Victoria.

Perry, number nine in the latest world rankings, opened with an 84 break in the first frame, but it was a grind from then on.

Perry won a crucial seventh frame on the black to edge 4-3 ahead before closing the match out.

Perry, who made close to £350k last season, now plays world number 16 Robert Milkins in the second round.
