Lions roar to their best win for years

"THE Lions are roaring big time."

"THE Lions are roaring big time."That was the proud boast from Peterborough Lions chairman Andy Moore after watching his side smash Brackley 53-17 at Bretton on Sunday.

"It was our best performance for years. The backs totally and utterly clicked, the sun shone and we had a crowd of almost 200 watching. It was a fantastic day," said Moore.

South Africans were responsible for six of their eight tries with Freddie Steyn grabbing three and Jaco Steinberg, Jacques Vorster and Leon Van Niekirk one apiece. Completing the try count were Dan Thompson and Damien Moore while Steinberg slotted two conversions and two penalties and dropped a goal from the halfway line.

New second row Michael Thompson from Durham gave an encouraging debut but the man-of-the-match award went to number eight Van Niekirk.

The victory sees the Lions move up to third spot in Midlands East Division Three (South).

SPALDING ran riot against Nottingham Moderns on Saturday to storm to the top of the table.

The Lincolnshire boys scored 15 tries in a whopping 93-3 victory and are now sitting pretty at the summit of Midlands East Division Three (North) - level pegging with Melton Mowbray and Ilkeston but with a far superior points difference.

With five young players – brothers Matt and Ed Hendry, Rob Wade, Ian Knight and Harry Exley – making their home debuts, Spalding were expecting a tough game against traditionally powerful opposition.

But on this occasion Spalding's creative passing and handling proved too much for the visitors.

Scrum-half Harry Sharman was once again top try-scorer with a hat-trick and there were two touchdowns apiece for Ben Williamson, Wade, Matt Hendry and George Brown. Others to cross in the rout were Adam McHugh, Jamie Anthony, Ed Hendry and Exley.OUNDLE claimed their second Midlands East Division Five (South) win of the season in convincing style at Wellingborough Old Grammarians.

Tries by Eddie King (2), Robbie Shingles, Dave Murdoch and Nick Cobley saw them comfortably home 36-10 and they jump up to third place in the table.

Number eight Cobley again showed real pace and power but Max Sones was awarded the man-of-the-match prize for his excellent continuity work and competitiveness at the breakdown.

A TRY by Chayne Loades, converted by Will Mardling proved just enough for Borough seconds to edge home 7-0 against a Leighton Buzzard second string who employed spoiling tactis to good effect.

Loades, along with Sam Crooks, was also outstanding in defence, while at the lineouts Crooks and Alfie Thompson reigned supreme, and Nick Kirk enjoyed a good debut at hooker.

SAM Bovan crossed for a hat-trick of tries as the Peterborough Development XV beat Daventry seconds 51-22.

Tom Gillett crowned an excellent performance at fly-half with a try for Oundle Colts but it wasn't enough to stave off an 8-5 defeat at Kettering.

THE youngsters came out on top at Thorney in the annual 'Pups v Vets' game with tries by Ash Blewett (2), Jonny Smith, Darren Barber (2) and Chris Warne helping the Pups to a 38-25 victory.

Youngsters Bradley Hurn and Jack Lewis shone again, with the latter being voted man-of-the-match by Vets captain Pete Twiggs.

Chris Crane played like a man with something to prove having been left out of the starting XV last week.

FORMER ice hockey star Simon Wren raced in for two tries and Elliott Brookes went one better as Bourne beat Andy Rowe's President's XV 53-5.

BOROUGH fourths (X-Men) turned in a poweful second-half showing to beat Northampton Casuals seconds 46-13. After half-an-hour Borough trailed 10-8 but strong running from man-of-the-match Vince Woodward saw them score regularly throughout the second half.

Woodward, Glen Rayner and Gus Mberi all crossed twice – the latter thanks to two delicate chips over the top by James Nottingham.
