Lions roar to a fourth consecutive Hunts County Cup success

HUNTINGDON 5 P'BORO LIONS 32

HUNTINGDON 5 P'BORO LIONS 32THE Peterborough Lions gobbled up their fourth successive Hunts County Cup success with a convincing 32-5 final win over Huntingdon at Hinchingbrooke School.

The city side have proved untouchable in this competition in recent seasons, much to the delight of chairman Andy Moore who was a drooling spectator on Saturday.

Moore said: "Some of the rugby we played, particularly in the first half, was outstanding.

"A few years ago it would have been unthinkable that we could beat Borough at Fengate and then beat Huntingdon in the same competition.

"But we now beat Borough every year and next season we will be playing in the same division as Huntingdon. We have come on leaps and bounds and we are getting better by the year.

"This final win has capped a great season as we also won a promotion."

A fast start settled Saturday's final as Lions raced into a 14-0 lead inside the opening 10 minutes thanks to some South African magic.

First Leon Van Niekirk picked up the ball at the base of a scrum, burst through an inviting gap and raced 50 yards to score under the posts.

And then Jacques Vorster went on a 40-yard run after finding a gap in the Huntingdon three-quarter-line. He looked like getting chased down close to the line, but a flipped pass behind his back drew gasps of astonishment from the sizable crowd and enabled Pole Piotr Lukaszewicz to race over the try-line unopposed.

Jaco Steenberg converted both tries and also kicked a penalty to give Lions a commanding 22-0 lead at half-time.

To their credit Huntingdon fought back well after the break and exterted decent pressure at times, but they failed to break through until 15 minutes from time when claiming an unconverted try.

But that just spurred Lions on and Freddie Steyn was soon sprinting over the try-line.

He was heading for the posts when three Huntingdon players converged on him, but instead of touching down he cheekily passed to Trompie Du Toit who did the honours.

Steenberg converted that and added a last-minute penalty to complete the scoring.
