BREAKING NEWS 8.15AM: THE preferred location of Peterborough United's new stadium will be announced early in the new year, club chairman Darragh MacAnthony revealed last night. The football stadium would be built "close" to the club's current ground in London Road and would hold between 15,000 and 20,000 supporters.
Speaking at the Posh Away Days book launch, held at Ebeneezers, in Woodston, Mr MacAnthony said the club's favoured site would be chosen from a shortlist of five.
He said: "We pretty much know which one we want. It's close. I have been saying that for a long time. It's a fantastic site that we're looking at.
"When it's done and dusted, there won't be one fan who is disappointed with the choice and what we're going to do there.
"I'm very excited. I can not quite confirm 100 per cent where it is or when it is happening, but I will say, be patient.
"Like I said with the takeover, it's going to happen and it's going to be very exciting when we do announce it. That will hopefully be early in the new year when we announce it."
When asked how big the ground would be, Mr MacAnthony said it depended on how long the process took.
However, he said he wouldn't copy the example of Darlington, who play their home games in a 25,000-seat stadium, which is never filled, leading to a "flat atmosphere".
Mr MacAnthony added: "The key is to get the right balance. You do not want to want to build a mammoth stadium with no atmosphere.
"You won't have any passion in the stadium. The fans will lose their voice. We want to make sure we have a stadium full of atmosphere.
"It could be 15,000, it could be 20,000, but it won't be less than 15,000, and most likely at the moment it won't be more than 20,000, unless obviously we are in the Premier League and we get 30,000 people queuing for season tickets."
At the launch of Posh Away Days – a collection of anecdotes from the club's fans about memorable trips around the country – Mr MacAnthony was joined by Posh first-teamers George Boyd, Aaron Mclean, Jamie Day and Craig Mackail-Smith.
Peterborough United's current London Road stadium has a capacity of 15,314 and was built in 1913.
