MARK Tyler insists he would rather fight for his place at Posh than drop down a division.The Evening Telegraph revealed yesterday that Posh are prepared to let their long-serving goalkeeper leave London Road with League Two side Luton Town a possible destination.
But Tyler, who has spent the last three-and-a-half months on loan at Championship promotion contenders Hull City, has no interest in playing in the Football League basement division.
Tyler said: "I am only interested in moving upwards, not backwards. The bottom line is I have two years left on my Posh contract and if nothing comes up in the summer I will stay and fight for my place.
"I had a chat with the manager last week and obviously I recognise that Joe Lewis will be the number one keeper at the start of next season.
"Joe is a great keeper. You don't get into England squads without having plenty of ability, but I've had challenges here before and I am prepared to stay here, work hard and keep him on his toes.
"You never know what's around the corner in football. I've enjoyed myself at Hull and if they do get into the Premier League they might want three keepers and that's something I'd certainly be interested in."
Tyler, who has made 486 senior appearances for Posh, the second highest in the club's history, will miss Hull's play-off campaign because of a back injury.
He received a superb ovation from Posh fans when he collected his League Two runners-up medal after the final game of the season on Saturday.
Tyler made 17 League Two appearances this season before the arrival of Lewis for a club record fee of 400,000.
Posh winger Chris Whelpdale signed an extension to his Posh contract on improved terms yesterday. He is now contracted at London Road to 2012.
Whelpdale said: "It has been a great season and signing a new deal has topped it off. I can't wait to get started again next season."
Rochdale have been given permission to field Posh striker Rene Howe in the League Two play-offs after the clubs came to an end-of-season agreement.
Striker Howe has been a sensation at Spotland scoring six goals in the last five games of the season, but he will be returning to Posh in the summer.
Rochdale play Darlington in the League Two play-offs with the first leg on Saturday.
Winger Josh Low, striker Danny Crow, full-backs Adam Smith and Danny Blanchett and goalkeeper Shwan Jalal are the other players Posh are prepared to release.
Reports in Luton yesterday claimed Hatters boss Mick Harford had distanced himself from a move for French defender Claude Gnapka, who has turned down a new deal.
Gnakpa reportedly wanted to become the third highest-paid player at Posh.
