Junior Football: Unbeaten Yaxley Under 16s end season in style

YAXLEY concluded another crushingly impressive unbeaten Division One campaign with a 6-1 win against Deaconians.

YAXLEY concluded another crushingly impressive unbeaten Division One campaign with a 6-1 win against Deaconians. After wrapping up their third top-flight crown in as many years with a 4-0 midweek win against Crowland, the Cuckoos really spread their wings on Sunday.

And what makes the result so remarkable is that alongside the names of Andrew Beech, Nathan Glover, Daniel Woodward, Andrew Franklin and Derry Chapman on the scoresheet was that of goalkeeper Adam Mitcham.

Cruising to another inevitable victory, Mitcham swapped his penalty box for the one at other end of the pitch and promptly scored a goal meaning every single player in the Yaxley squad has scored this season.

Manager Glyn Brothwell said: "We wanted to get him a goal and he took his chance well, it was a nice way to round off the season.

"It has been tough on the boys as they have had so much football to play but they have coped well and to win the league three years in a row is an excellent achievement."

But despite the ongoing success of his side, Brothwell is still unsure of what the future holds next season.

"I am prepared to stay on and manage the team but it is up to the lads themselves," he added.

"A lot of them are off to college and things and may be packing it in. We will just have to wait and see what happens, but if that is it I would like to say that it has been a pleasure working with such a talented group of young players."

IN Division Two, a Tom Bremner goal gave champions Rippingale B a 1-0 win in their local derby against Stamford at Wothorpe Road.

The game was played in celebratory mood at the home of the Daniels as both Stamford and Rippingale had already secured promotion for the second season in a row.
